Be Broadband

With that SNR margin, there's no way you'd get 2Mbps and you'd be extremely unlikely to get any more out of Be. As for future cable expansion, stick about:blank into your browser.

Thats the thing though, i did have 2.5Mbps from when ADSLMax came out up until the end of summer last year. How could my speed all of a sudden drop 0.5Mbps over that time? And i do currently have 2Mbps speed. I put another ticket to ADSL24 and they said to look at my internal wiring and that they will get BT to investigate.

EDIT: Just realised, where you talking to FishPolice or me?

SSH on any port shouldn't be an issue - they block port 25 incoming by default, but if you're on a static IP that can be removed.

The former. I could've quoted, but my post was directly under FishPolice's :p

Increased crosstalk, some deterioration in your line or increased noise somewhere - you're not that far off the 2.5Mbps profile, so it could be anything

Ahh, I've gone for dynamic so will outgoing mail be a problem?

Currently I have Thunderbird / BT configured to allow me to use the mail client on behalf of my domain.

e.g. Thunderbird email can send out mail as frankrizzo at mysite . co . uk

BT had to do something to authorise that and I had to configure thunderbird outgoing server to BTs smtp server.

Will that still be possible with BE?

Haha, O2 seem to be determined not to let me sign up to their 20meg service. I'm not sure why they don't want my extra money? :p

However I was told this:
If you find you tend to get higher speeds because of the low attenuation, it's possible that you will be able to get more than 16meg with us.

When you sign up for a package with us, you are given the option to sign up for the packages we think your line can support. If you were to sign up for the 16meg package and we see your line can support a higher speed, we will happily upgrade you to the 20meg package if that's what you wanted to do.

Seems reasonable enough.

Thats what i thought after i posted :D Just happened before in the past with someone else.

ADSL24 say that they have never really seen a master socket like my one before. Would getting one of those broadband specific sockets make much difference?

What master socket have you got?
The filtered faceplates are just that, a faceplate for the existing NTE5. If you haven't got one of those, it'll be useless to you.

I think its the NTE5 shown here:

NTE5_BT_rear.jpg

At the top you can see "A, B, E". Thats where all my wires are connected to, not into the numbers 1-6 like with other peoples.

I have found out that one of the extension boxes i have has the layout that everyone else seems to have. So i removed all the wires apart from 2 and 5 and plugged my router into it and then the extension lead to the master socket. I know that its probably not going to do anything, but my Downstream Margin dropped from around 11-14db down to 3db at this moment. I know it wont stay that low, but im hoping it will stay at around 6db.

I'm right in saying that the sync rate is determined by the Downstream Margin? Meaning the higher the Margin is, the lower the sync will be? Since mine was around 14db, i got synced at 2mb, whereas i use to have a margin at 6-8db and synced at 2.5mb and even 3mb on occasions.

I got my BeBox today and I am syncing slightly lower than I expected but I am going to let it set in for a couple of days before I try any tweaking.

My main problem is that from the wireless side of the router I cant see any computers on the wired interface.

Does anyone else have this problem or a solution? Thanks in advance

Just had a proper look at my stats again and either its just fluctuating a bit or it's because I was on the laptop last night when I logged into the Netgear router status page -could that have made a difference to my SNR Margin figure? Surely not.

Connection Speed: 1152kbps [down] / 288kbps [up]
Line Attenuation: 55db [down] / 15.5db [up]
Noise Margin: 14db [down] / 20db [up]

Also, how accurate is that calculator thing in the sticky? It does seem to suggest this line *might* get around 3.5mb with ADSL2+ enabled.

Yeah I know, I'm probably just in denial...Be isn't gonna improve things is it... :(

Using your laptop won't make any difference, but your SNR margin's more than quadrupled - it won't help you with Be (or anyone else for that matter) unless you can get the fluctuation under control (and that might not be possible).

The calculator is an estimate - it's about as good as it gets, short of actually trying it.

so does it really matter if I go for a dynamic ip address over a static? this in in real terms?

calculator estimate :D

Current Line Sync (connection) speed in Kilo bits per second (Kbps)
2272

Downstream Line Attenuation (dB)

26

Noise Margin, sometimes referred to as Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR)

20

results
If your service provider uses ADSL2+ we estimate you may manage line speeds of: 18645Kbps
With ADSL2+ the maximum IP throughput is likely to be around: 16500Kbps

what worries me is my noise ratio goes to 18 sometimes

so is that something bad?? yeah I dl stuff & play games is the static ip for hosting stuff as I've got a static ip with adsl24, not sure if I had one with BT when I was with them on their max package... um puzzled. btw what is on port 25

SMTP - i.e. you can run your own mail server.

It won't make any odds to you whether you have a static or dynamic IP.

Thanx Tolien U always come up with the simple answer for the simpleton, I guess your on Be so when I need advice for my netgear dg834g setup I'll ask for directions.

Thanx

Kev!

Just ordered Be a few days ago and apparently it's going to be activated on the 31st :D So much for the 2-4 weeks delay!

By the way, I've heard the Be Box isn't very good. I'll be using it to connect my game consoles and PCs, as well as for streaming media between those machines. Should I buy a different router? What do you recommend?
Edit: Just looking around... Has anyone had any problems with the Netgear DG834G?

Im using the Bebox with my 360 for LiVE, playing back recorded tv via media center and for streaming avi's via transcode 360, my daughters PC is also connected wirelessly.
Although i did get the "strict" NAT problem, which i overcame by assigning a static ip to the xbox.

How has everyone been faring tonight? My upload has been a total mess since Saturday night, hovering around 400-700kbps instead of 1.2mb. My router has been heavily disconnecting/reconnecting all day today. I'd estimate around 20+ times.

I've been told that some transatlantic line between the UK and USA was severed resulting in isp issues for a lot of people. No solid sauce for that though.
