Rio Ferdinand - England captain

Christ.

[edit]He's just seeing how they do:

"Capello has confirmed this continues his policy of rotating the captaincy between players in the friendly matches before confirming a permanent captain for the World Cup qualifying games."

Some stupid comments so far. He's been brilliant all season, better than Gerrard, Terry or any other you care to mention. he deserves a shot.

;) youstole i like your style :p your consistent and that counts :)

how many smilies did i really need there? i think i went to excess.

Definitely worth a shot at it if Cappello is rotating the captaincy to see who's best. Its not an important match so I suppose it's a good time to see how the team works with a different captain.

Didn't expect Rio to be picked but theres no harm done, only criticism will be if we lose on Wednesday how much of the flak will he get, deserved or not

But he can't demonstrate the 'stiff upper lip' that the English are famous for.

:D

Rather that than Gerrard's squint.

Yup, totally agree, but hasn't Terry been out for a while? Still a good choice imo.

Terry has been out and i'm sure he will get his shot soon. In a way i would see it as more disrespectful to him for Capello to make him captain now and then to rotate him out again afterwards in his search for the true captain. much better to go through the other potentials first.

*edit 'in search of the true captain' makes it sound like i'm putting down Terry. In search of his permanent captain would be more accurate.

Rio has been playing really good for man utd, best defence in the Prem, so dont see why not!

I wasn't aware that a captain gets chosen from how your performing? I thought it was down to the influence you have on your team, the respect and the ability to shout out orders etc?

What influence have any of England's recent captains had on their performance?

Wasn't he captain at Leeds for a while?

Yeah, when Radebe was out for too long through injury.

I said at the time that he'd be England captain, but he shouldn't be now. His off-field antics are too much.

Terry is the man and has been since he hit the squad.
