Surely that's incorrect though. If an ice shelf breaks off it means the ice itself is rapidly melting IIRC, which will alter the sea level even if only a little bit. The biggest problem is what it means for the near-future sea level if ice shelves are breaking off now.

Wouldn't I've floating already be displacing It's mass of water, so as it melts and shrinks in size it will only take up the same amount of water it had displaced when it was ice, so would have no net change?

Ice is more dense than water.
