DC2 Type-R engine is a B18, mine is what's known as a 'frankenstein' build, it uses the B20 bottom end that's found in the HRV, but with the ITR B18 VTEC top end. The idea is to get better torque across the rev range, and well built B20's can work very well.

Hard to explain really, could've been the EP3 chassis clouding the experience but you just don't feel like you're going fast.
It's too easy to drive them 'fast', whereas with mine if you drop out of vtec between gears you're going nowhere, might aswell be in a Mondeo. It's that that keeps it exciting, knowing you have to do a good gearchange to progress, it's involving. I know it's not just the lower VTEC point that contributes to this though, the K20 gearbox is awesome
I know the K20 is a good engine on paper, just wondered if it was Drexels kinda thing.

You have some tasty options there Ben, and the current Teg engine is worth quite a bit - £900 each new for the Toda cams alone
And a B20b block (better of 2 available)

Only cause of the i-vtec to be honest. Helps midrange no end

K20 + Hardware needed to fit = Big money.
You already have a nice low compression bottom end, you know what to do
Its running nearly 11:1 isn't it? That's not low comp!!!

You won't need character when you're reeling in E46 M3's.

Got the car back today, apart from not making any power on VTEC, the engine is running sweet as a nut. The idle was a bit dodgy before it went in, it's now perfect, and it's now lovely and smooth down low and on part throttle. It also pulls fairly well down low, so it just shows that Richy is on the ball with his mapping skills, it would have been awesome if it had worked 
Anyway, onwards and upwards, I'm currently looking into a freshly built B18C that is up for sale. It has been built by ERL in the states with a decked block, knife-edged crank, forged pistons and rods etc etc, the top end is equally as nicely specced. It apparently cost the best part of £7k to build and is good for 10k rpm and 250bhp+
Need to do more homework on it first though.
Anyway, onwards and upwards, I'm currently looking into a freshly built B18C that is up for sale. It has been built by ERL in the states with a decked block, knife-edged crank, forged pistons and rods etc etc, the top end is equally as nicely specced. It apparently cost the best part of £7k to build and is good for 10k rpm and 250bhp+

forgive the ignorance, but the "mismatched components" diagnosis makes it sound like the thing would run like a bag of spanners
but it doesnt.
What did the original tuner do wrong then ? just choose components that werent complimentary and cancelled out others power gains ?
and why did this only happen when you got it, did something change or ?
