Do I really need this specification? - Toshiba 37Z3030DB

Hi Guys

Basically I want a PS3 not only for games but for tv viewing either from its BluRay or freeview.

Now I could get any sort of LCD, but I notice people talking about its 24fps and even 5:5 (even though I dont know what it means.)

Basically its for my bedroom and at the very end of my bed there is a slim shelf at the foot of my bed.

Distance? 6' from where I'd be laying.

Will this tv spec be actually needed? or is it all I'd need is perhaps a 1080i LCD?

I always think I need to spend around the £800 mark, but I cannot justify spending that much on a tv I may not use everday?

Should I just go for a much much cheaper LCD and just make do?

Cheers for any suggestions.

I am not an expert with TV's, but it is all about what you are willing to spend.
You can get good 32" LCDs for less than £600 now.

I got a Samsung 32" LCD last year for £575 (using discount codes online). It is probably only worth about £300 now. Based on your post I would say you don't need all the bells and whistles of the top end TV's.

I agree here, but you can pick up a 37" Samsung for under £500 though which is a steal compared too how much LCD TV's used to be and the price difference between 32" and 37".
 
I'm new to big LCD's too so I'm gonna keep my budget lower and see what bang I get for my buck. I'm going with a 32" sony LCD well under £500 (I've got a smaller room to put it in, 37" will be a bit too big I believe) and learn what I like and dont like about its features and quality. Next year maybe I will sell it and buy a more expensive tv with some knowledge and appreciation of what I need from a big telly.

With these requirements it's ridiculous that people are recommending LCD over plasma. The standard definition picture (inbuilt freeview) of a plasma is far superior to an LCD tv. I might have a Pioneer, but my parents have the toshiba 42 X3030 and the picture quality from both the inbuilt tuner and sky+ box are AWFUL compared o othe plasmas I have seen, and the one I own.

Another thing about plasmas is that they are far superior for movies, just better picture quality and much smoother movement. THey are also pretty damn good at gaming, and as long as you don't leave a channel or game on the same shot for 10 hours, then there is no real chance of damaging the screen through burn.

Not something to really worry about. It is to do with Blu-rays being recording for 24 fps (frames per second), and if tvs can't do this then you may see 'judder' when the camera pans. My 720p pioneer converts it, and without getting into details, does a very good job, and I hardly ever notice judder.

You will be fairly close, so a 1080p set might look marginally more crisp, but it is much better to buy a quality HD READY (720p/1080i) plasma than an LCD quoting 1080p, 100hz and other fancy things. The picture quality is not just down to the resolution, especially evident with the pioneers which look far superior even to the very very good 1080p panasonic plasmas.

Don't skimp out, and go for the best you can afford with your budget. If you have a small room and think a 42 might be too big for your room, then check out the Panasonic 37 PX70. It is a 720p/1080i plasma that look fantastic for normal tv, and also looks very very good for blu-rays / games / dvds upscaled. It costs about £600, with the 42 version being £700, and the newer PX80 (just released) 37 inch coming in at £670.

Spend the rest on blu-rays / games for the PS3, and enjoy your great tv and setup :)

I can't imagine SD quality from the Hannspree will as good as the Toshiba 37X you were looking at, which isn't as good as the Pioneer Kuro -Ad- has.

It's all about what sort of image you prefer. Plasma's produce a softer image (apparently due to the gaps between the cells or something) and LCD's produce a sharper image, as the pixels are closer together.

The softer image of a plasma makes SD look better than it does on an LCD, but, this is my opinion now, I much prefer the picture produced by my 42Z displaying high definition content, to the Panasonic plasma's I was looking at too.

People have differing opinions though, -Ad- prefers plasma, I prefer LCD (well, I wouldn't mind a Plasma for SD content!)

Work out how much you want to spend, and what size you want to go for, then make your choice. If it were me I'd be taking the 37Z, as I'm so impressed with my 42Z after going through a bunch of other LCD TV's to find one that delivered no clouding or faulty pixels, and that looked really good with SD material, as well as HD.
