Does this strike anyone else as the most pointless piece of legislation ever?

Anybody could get easily themselves an almost infinite amount of anonymous addresses, do the government not realise this? It basically relies on trusting the individual to inform the police of any email address they register, so it can be banned from social networking sites - surely if they had an intention of doing so they would simply not inform the police?

Pointless.

Like you, I fail to see what possible benefit this can provide...

Surely the solution is for parents to actually parent their children...

Maybe its ISP email addresses only?

They're optional too though sometimes, saying that, they could give there mobile number and change sim card, or give there address and move out.

I assume there is some sort of procedure in place, if not you're right, Pointless.

This is just daft.

Most people have more than one email address. And if your address is passed on you can just reregister. Pointless.

I saw an interview on this morning about this. Apparently it would then be an offense to use a new email address - punishable by 5 years in jail IIRC.

So it's not some stupid, pointless exercise, it's designed to have some clout, however the policing of that would be pretty hard.

One of the people from the home office said:

She said she accepted such a scheme could never be "completely foolproof" but did not see that as a reason not to try.

I like that, just becasue it isn't perfect doesn't mean that something shouldn't be done.

 Not possible don't be daft.

What we need is an internet police to monitor our activities 24/7 and arrest anyone on suspicion of any criminal activity.

Or just blocking all porn sites on the net for UK customers. Isn't that how the UK government deals with problems. If it's broke BAN IT!

Even better would be installing webcams in your homes since 80% of child sex abuse is done by relatives.

lol I heard this on the radio this morning... Since when was an email address tied to anyone and/or used as any form of identification or tracking..?

A quote from that blog from the home office:

[We want to] Make it more difficult for people registered over the age of 18 to search for users under the age of 18 - Home Office

Ive got my wee brother as a friend on my bebo, im 22, he is 13. Clearly im now a incestoral paedo??

What utter turd.

They could face up to 5 years in prison if they get caught changing or giving false email addresses.

With the current policy on prisoner early release due to the problems with prison overcrowding do you really think that this will happen?..do you really believe someone will be given 'upto' 5 years for providing a false address?

Not to mention the fact that the authorities barley keep track of where these offenders live, let alone what their bloody e mail address is.

As usual sounds great in theory but will never work in reality, the authorities are just not capable of enforcing this in any shape.

If the only benefit is the possible punishment, then why not just introduce a law stating it's illegal for registered sex offenders to use social networking sites? Without getting into the debate of whether that should be the case or not, it would negate the need for this ridiculous idea and still implement the punishment if caught.

This system will cost at least tens of thousands of pounds to implement and basically offers NO benefit in detecting illegal activity.

The legislation as it stands will not help prevent anything.
As has been said it doesn't take much to get an email address from anywhere.

However the same thing could be said about being on the sex offenders register in general.
Give false details, move house and not inform the police and you can be dragged back into court and thrown in jail for it.

I expect the ruling will say that all email addresses must be disclosed.
So somebody on the list gets a new email address and doesn't inform the police.
If he is found to have this new address at some point in the future then he'll suffer the same fate as somebody not informing the police of a change of name or address - chance of being thrown in jail.

So your right - on the surface it's silly.
Dig a llittle deeper and it is a way of getting people who don't conform into jail a lot easier.

It's similar to signing the visa waiver when you to to the US.
Of course anybody with something to hide will sign this anyway.
Chances are (as the US don't have access to our criminal records database) the person will get through without a problem.
If however at a later date they are found to have lied then they can be immediately thrown out of the country.

Does that mean that if you get the paedos details, register an email address, then register to bebo, or myspace he will get lifted a put back in jail?

Sounds like a plan to rid the streets of paedos :D
