Thinking of buying this tomorrow

Yeah i agree, although from some of the ones I have seen I actually prefer the cloth.

However putting in leather later on isn't really a problem.

My GF is looking at buying an MX5 (albeit with a little nudge from me :D) and I would be interested to here your thoughts if you do go ahead with it.

Good luck :)

Give her a push rather than nudge :D

MK1 for raw driving, 2 for more refined drive.

I think it is too, keep an eye out on autotrader and cheap ones will come up.

Yeah I have been keeping an eye on auto trader, I've been looking at them for a while now and I agree there are cheaper examples out there. (See http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17840811&highlight=mx5) I've been to see quite a few as well. But unfortunately for me my current car has just given up the ghost and I've lost the gift of time to find *that bargin*.

Baring the this in mind the above pretty much fits the bill and I've seen a lot worse for more money.

Found this a fair wack cheaper and better specced, and within 16 miles of the same postcode:

Yeah I've umm'd and ahh'd over this one, i'm not keen on the wood trim and I prefer the silver (feels more modern). Plus the actual car is 2 years older. I've seen some really horrible leather seats and it has really put me off looking for a car with leather. It will need tax and mot during the year too and I should be able to get that with the dealer.

But,

It's still worth a look I guess, would be silly not to, but I think I may prefer the slighty more modern blue one.

- thanks for the link!

Just phoned the guy about this, he advised me that he is the 6th owner of the car, main dealer service history stops at 76k but has been serviced once since. In comparison the car I first posted has the full history and only one previous owner (probably why the interior looks so good perhaps).

Oh its a fun old game this. :o

4.4k for mine, 16' alloys, full leather, 56K, new tyres, 6months tax & mot, oct 99 (v plate) if it's any use for comparison.

Ok cool I will bare that in mind - but as i'm now car-less I don't really have the time to shop around and I cant really go too far afield for it. (long travel = time) Parkers states the dealer price is £5200 and the private good price is £4800, so at least the car is below dealer price.

Must be an uber car.. anyone else noticed the insurance group lol :D

This terrible ad almost put me off looking at the car in the first place!!

OK quick update,

I test drove the MX5 from the dealer this morning, drove exactly like an MX5 should.

However I was less than impressed with the service I got from the salesman. Firstly he seemed far too preoccupied cleaning one of his other cars to be talking to me and at no point after I came back did he give me his full attention.

Seccondly I wanted to test the roof with some water to check for any obvious leaks, this to him seemed like an absurd idea as I would never find anything wrong without it actually raining, he also made me feel guilty by saying to the young kid that was helping clean the car that he would have to wipe it all down again. - The roof did leak on the passengers side but apparently he has had a fair few MX5s and they have all leaked, its normal.

He then stated that he wouldnt budge on price because even private sellers dont sell their MX5s this cheap.

Also when we were on the topic of MX5s I stated that I would prefer a MK2 for the more refined ride, this seemed to offend him as he bit back saying that all real MX5 enthusiasts prefer MK1s and that the MK2s have lost all the character. Now I know that a lot of MX5 fans do prefer the MK1 because of the raw experiance but he was quite confrontational in making his point.

Finally when I had got back from the test he stated that he had been a bit worried because I had taken my time, I explained that I wanted to try the car on a duel carriage way and that I needed to put some fuel in the car to do so. I thought it was a cheek to make me feel like I shouldnt have had a proper drive and to make me pay for the fuel to do so.

So in summary I was probably prepared to pay the full amount for the car but I wouldnt want it to go in his pocket. I walked away feeling like I had been an inconvenience to him, if i'm paying almost £5000 for a car I want the dealer to feel like my best mate going out his way to help me. Shocking.

I went to see another MX5 later this afternoon, managed to get the price down to £3800 for a 98 1.8is which is great but the owner has had a slow speed collision and the front bumper is damaged and would probably need either replacing or respraying.

So, not really the greatest of days really. But my old man has kindly lent me his 106 for a couple of weeks so I dont need to rush so much now to find what i'm looking for.

Not actually a 'quick' update was it? Sorry for the rant.
