Chance would be a fine thing if I were back choosing my options. I would have never picked sewing and domestic housecare over football and Biology!

Anyway, my daughter came home with her options form the other day of which she was to pick from a massive seclection of three.. THREE! Hardly a choice of options eh. What really got my goat (sorry Goaty) is that R.E. is compulsory! Thanks god I'm an athiest!

The only subjects I had which were compulsory were English, Maths and one science subject.

Our curriculum was decided apart from two option blocks. So it was either the extra language or music. Or not do either if you wanted to do geography and history. That was 8 years ago!

Get her to learn italian, marine biology and mob business studies. Might be useful in the future.

Just a thought..

I got quite a generous choice of my GCSE subjects. English, Science and Maths were the only compulsory ones. I still didn't particularly enjoy studying any of them though. :p

Only got 2 option blocks at school, although had the choice from Geog/History/PE GCSE/Child Development/Computing AS/Technologies (already done GCSE early). Not a massive choice but the forced RS and forced Citizenship bugs me too. However what REALLY gets me is being forced to do Spanish GCSE and French AS (again, early GCSE), both of which I would not in a million years have chosen, and am thus doing fairly badly at them and they won't look so great on a results list which is otherwise hopefully full of A/A*s.

Don't think a lesson a week of RS is a bad thing, particularly with the world as it is today. But I agree about the limited options - I don't see why you're only allowed to study one humanity, one 'creative' subject etc. I wanted to do History and IT, which for some reason wasn't allowed, and I had to do a 'technology' (wordwork, metalwork, cooking etc) which I wasn't interested in at all. That was 10 years ago but it doesn't seem to have changed much. Why can't it just be 3 subjects of your choice?

I remember a person in my year whose parents told the school she would not do RE and so they let her go to the library instead. However looking back at my GCSE RE days it wasnt really about christianity but more the ethics behind racism, abortion etc etc

Lucky you. Ours is all about the views of 2 different parts of christianity, it's literally the most dull hour of the week. If I got to learn about other religions, their beliefs motivations, ethics and the like, I'd be a bit more taken by it.

*only* three? There were only two in my area and only one of them was a realistic choice. The other was a long travelling distance. Thankfully RE wasn't compulsory back then, but I chose humanities GCSE which meant I had to do it as part of that :/

Is that for GCSE?

When I picked mine (2 years ago) we had quite a large choice ob subjects.
Maths, English and all 3 sciences were compulsary.
R.E was also compulsary for the first year, and it was just about Christianity and Islam. Worst subject ever. I remember a teacher telling someone in the class that their opinion that god isn't real was wrong.

I think was more to do with Huddy's lobster thread :D

Clearly it was mentioned for the essential lifes skills to survive in her neighbourhood. But a question huddy is that pick 1 option from 3 or pick 3 options from a list?

Might not be a bad idea. Then she can get on with your mafia neighbours ;)

Edit: bah should have read the full thread before going along this line of thought ¬_¬"

we got to choose ICT or RE and then do the latter as a "muck about" lesson once a week

Obv had to do all core subjects, then 2 choices such as History, Business, Geography etc

Then wether to do PE and 1 language or 2 language's
