I've been driving my 1.6 automatic escort for a year and I've got to say that the auto-box in this car is awful. The time has come to move on to my 2nd car I want something with a good auto box for around £2000. Gentlemen, spec me my 2nd car. Thank you.

£2k and good auto will be hard to find.
Up the budget a bit and get a facelift Focus auto, the boxes are a lot better than the older ones in the escort/fiesta/mondeo.

There are some focus's around your budget, but its better to go for a lower mileage one.

I thought the Ford Auto Boxes were pap? or is it just the Mondeo ones?

The Mondeo auto box isn't pap, per se. It's actually a quite responsive, smooth and well handling box. It just drinks fuel like it's going out of fashion and falls apart after 90,000 miles...

Like any gearbox I suppose really then..

The mondeos in his price range (mk1/2) do not have good boxes.

So a focus would be my best bet then?. Not for the money I have but maybe I can go to £3500 if I sell some stuff and my car and do some overtime.

probably be slated for this but take your pick of reasonably low miles well maintained w202 c class mercedes for £3500. 5 speed auto box is usually decent, maintenance costs may be high if you get a lemon but pretty reliable in my experience of owning a couple and facelift still looks reasonably smart.

The only way to get a really nice smooth autobox at your budget is to get a 6 cylinder engine or go for a premium manufacturer where autoboxes are more common.

My suggestion is to pick up an old luxury car for £1k and throw it away when it breaks and you can't fix it. It's what I do :)
