Overweight

6ft 3in 105kg, therefore I am a fat ******* no? :confused::p

Despite the stereotypical fat trucker image, I am actually not fat at all. :)

You realise that to have lost 5 lbs of fat you would've needed to have a calorie defecit of 17,500 calories? In three days? Which is laughably unbelievably impossible?

Actually, you're wrong :)

When I was in my late teens I had a stupidly fast metabolism and my average calorie intake was around 6000 per day. I maintained a steady bodyweight for a couple of years like that. If I'd stopped eating for 3 days and continued with my normal routine (I had a physically demanding job, played football 3 times a week, walked everywhere etc - basically I hardly sat down). I would have achieved a calorie deficit of around 18,000 in 3 days.

Not "laughably unbelievably impossible" but highly improbable ;)

To answer the OP. Whatever you feel comfortable with is fine. If you're uncomfortable with your size or fitness levels then you should do something about it.

I have been quite happy for a while being big (5'10" - 108Kgs) but as I'm getting older, I'm finding being unfit more and more inconvenient (the fags don't help either). I'm thinking it's probably about time I started trying to shed a few pounds and pack in the smokes.

I'm a great believer in the tried and tested method of losing weight "Eat less and move more". I'm not a big fan of gyms and stuff so I'll probably do a bit of walking, maybe get myself a bike - that sort of thing.

Do sport - it's so much easier than worrying about how many calories you've had. I've never had to worry about what I eat or drink because I do a lot of sport.

same here, I lost 3 stone the other year and are now a good weight for my height. It really is the hardest thing i've ever done but i'm glad I did it. IMHO eating less is not as important as eating well, I still ate a lot of food when I had my weight loss, but it was all healthy food (loads of fruit, drank loads of water, bran for brekkie, wholemeal bread sandwiches for lunch, I had a lot of fish dinners too).

Best of luck benjarghmin with the dieting, if you do have a beer/food binge dont feel guilty about it, just have a good walk the next day and burn it off then get back on the healthy food until the next time you want to binge :)

I think some of you should be more concerned about what’s in your food rather than how much you eat.

"I think its not acceptable to be fat" is an utterly stupid comment, you can control how much you put in your mouth but you cannot control each individuals metabolisms. Some people are born with big frames and from the start weight more than "average", like myself I was 9.4 as baby and looked 2 weeks old @ 2 days.

As for the NHS measurements and labelling, if you cant see ribs and bones your extremely obese. 5`8 @ 95KGS is nothing to worry about if your fit and dont eat junk (oftern). You have to enjoy yourself after all ;)

Edit: Ive also noticed a fair few friends and family become obessed over loosing weight.

I am currently dieting, but have tonight decided to drink lots of beer and get drunk, which will probably involve also eating food later. Shame really.

Anywho, I'm 5'8 and weight 95kg, which is quite heavy but I am not noticeably large (in the sense of "oh he's a right fatty", just average man-fat I guess.) I would prefer to be of an average build, but I really don't see being large as such a big problem, and so lack the motivation to stay dieting.

Is it acceptable/normal to 'accept' being large as a consequence of great enjoyment of food/beer, or is there something wrong with me

If you're 95 kg you are technically obese. I would seriously consider doing something about your weight since if you carry on going at this rate it will get worse. I am the same height as you and 30kg lighter, but I'm not 'naturally' that way, I have to watch what I eat. If you want to lose weight [which you should] aim for eating no more than 1400 calories a day at least five days a week. Do this till you get to 75kg, which would be a much healthier weight.

It's fine if you're a bodybuilder. If you're not, it's dangerous.

As sad as it sounds, weightwatchers online works wonders for getting it into your head just what kind of crap you're eating. After a look at my diet, I'm now eating more food than before but because it's healthier and lower in calories and saturated fat, I've been losing 2lbs each and every week and not been hungry at all.

When you only have a 20 points a day allowance and a chocolate bar is 7 points and an apple is a 1/2 point, it quickly becomes apparent which to choose.
To those that would say 'duh' to the above, I went through a period where I'd be like, yeah, I should have an apple but 1 chocolate bar won't matter... but it does matter and I think it just helps get it into your head how bad most of the crap we eat is.

Precisely. It sounds like you're doing really well, well done!

I used to have one chocolate bar a day.. lots of pizza and beer... and went up to 14 stone, which at my height is way too low. I cut it all out and now am 10 stone and feel great. As well as this, I got to know my body and what it can deal with and I can still drink and eat what I like two nights a week without putting on weight, so I don't feel like I'm depriving myself at all. You just can't eat and drink crap all the time.

I would like to point out that every professional sportsman out there is clincally obese by the NHS measurements.

That's rubbish, don't believe whoever told you that. BMI is only a guide - true - but the only way it would show you as clinically obese when you weren't is if you were a bodybuilder. BMI does account for muscle mass, but not extreme muscle mass. It is a guide for the average person, not for those consuming SuperWheyProtein2000 ten times a day.

People are always shocked when I tell them how much I weigh, as I don't look it at all. I'm 18stone, so for me to say this on here, those who haven't seen a pic of me, or seen me in the flesh will be thinking "What a tubber!" but people who have seen me and don't know I'm 18stone always say "NFW!"

Just eat what you want when you want. If you want to be fitter then do some exercise. Dont moan about it just do it...

Bone density plays a part, as can lean muscle mass, as the same volume of muscle weighs more than fat.

I'm 5'11" and 77kg, and have been this hieght and weight since I was 18 (now 25). I eat alright, but sometimes have junk days, but my metabolism is silly fast.

Being an old fat git, I can speak from experience.

It's not ok to be overweight and you will find that in later life, you will regret it almost as much as those who smoke will.

When I was young, I was not overweight but did smoke; my first major heart attack was at age 41 and the second at 46. I'm now 57 and being told that I'm borderline diabetic and need to lose weight and change my diet.

If you want to have a healthy and happy life and enjoy your family, lose weight and stop smoking; if you think it won't happen to me ......... oh yes it will, it's just a matter of time.

If you want to carry on being overweight or a smoker, that's ok with me but don't kid yourself that you won't suffer for it, because you will.

Sorry to be the voice of doom but too many youngsters think that they are invincible; just modify things a little and you may live a lot longer.

Actually, it's you who is talking rubbish. One of my workmates went for his offshore medical a couple of years back. The doctor gave him a thorough examination and checked his weight and told him he needed to lose weight as he was clinically obese - even though he could see that the guy didn't have an ounce of fat on him (he'd not long finished 6 years in the Marines).

It depends on the doctor, how much store they put in the BMI. At my offshore medical last year, the doctor said to me "You're overweight but your not fat - nothing to worry about". Before anyone starts criticising the doctor for being irresponsible, he meant as far as my build was concerned. He did say that I should do more exercise (and cut down on the beer :o) as my job and lifestyle are pretty sedentary at the moment.

Bigstan - you did not have super human metabolism, you just used a lot more calories than a normal person. Having a very high metabolism is more rare than people think.
