Pivotal moments in your gaming history?

So many but here's a few.
Beachhead on my amstrad.
Raid over Moscow on my c64.
Zoom on my amiga.
Wipeout on my ps1.
But the truly memorable occasions happened when i got online :D
Quake 2 sticks in my mind and also teamfortress.
Homeworld also (still play this now ocasionally)
But the biggie for me has to be counterstrike, Started when it was in beta stage (remember the zoomable m4 anyone?:D) and I still play it now around ten years later.I dont think any game will keep me occupied for that amount of time again.

Well, has to be getting my hands on pong as a young `un and also clapping eyes on my very 1st Space invader `cab.
And my 1st consoles (Grandstand...with biggggggggg yellow cartridges and the good old Atari 2600 ) :D.

Probably seeing Shadow of the Beast on the Amiga. Listen to that soundtrack! Look at those parallax graphics!

So, so many, but playing these games stand out above the others...

  • Astro Wars and BMX Bandit, both by Grandstand iirc.
  • Jet Set Willy, Horace and the Spiders, Firelord, Bounty Bob Strikes Back, Thro' the Wall (the version of Breakout that came on the Horizons tape).
  • Outrun coin-op.
  • Zarch on the Acorn Archimedes (anyone else remember that?)
  • Kick Off 2 and Llamatron on the ST.
  • Doom for ground-breaking gameplay. Half Life Generations so that I could play Counter Strike. The Call of Duty series.

Playing goldeneye at a mates and becoming hooked for 4 years.
Playing SOF2 and becoming hooked for 4 years
Playing for the UK team at SOF2
Playing SOF2 for the last time :(

"obtaining" Half Life without knowing what it was and being blown away

Yep picked it out of a bargain bin at a department store and was blown away by it.

Also starcraft and 007 Golden Eye on N64, was the only reason I got N64 even though PS2 was coming out soon.

Also the original CS, still remember the countless hours spent with friends at an Internet cafe.

Sticking purely to PC games in light of the forum:

1) 14/10/1997, ~9pm. The first time I ever played Quake, which came 'pre-installed' on my first proper PC as the guy who built it had been using it to test the soundcard and 'forgot' to uninstall it :) Quake was the game which helped to guide me on a path away from complex games such as strategy which had traditionally interested me, onto more 'quick fix' adrenaline type stuff.

2) Overhearing a couple of people discussing logitech mice in a lecture in 1998, so I chipped in with a question. Got talking and it turned out one of the guys played Quakeworld online... he convinced me to get involved and play it instead of just normal Quake, introducing me to the great service that was Barrysworld. It's funny to think that had I not said anything, maybe I never would have found out this stuff and wouldn't still be playing QW (occasionally!) nearly 10 years later. Taking up QW, representing the UK, travelling to a LAN in Sweden....it's fair to say that QW is the single most important thing in my gaming life, and it also spoiled me to the extent that I don't even bother trying modern multiplayer FPS anymore.

3) The release of Quake 3 Arena. Despite a lukewarm reaction to the demo amongst QW players, once the game actually came out there was a large shift of players over to it - many of whom (including a former clanmate of mine, Q50, who went on to be fairly successful in the 'pro' clan Four Kings) openly admitted that Q3 was inferior to QW, but they were moving over for the community aspect and self-fulfilling prophecy "because everyone else is!". This was the beginning of the end for the UK QW scene and although it continued on for a few years afterwards, it was also the catalyst for a much more continental approach to clan matches. It's actually been 6 years now since I played in a UK based clan!

As the title really, what were the moments in gaming which stick out to you?

I have to say for me, three spring to mind.

First playing Doom. Having been stuck in the 2d world of gaming since the early 80's Doom was almost like real life! It made me build my first PC back in 95.

Getting a voodoo card and playing Quake 2 for the first time with lighting effect etc. Was blown away at the time.

Omaha beach in MOH.

Cant think of anything since which has had the same effect.

Pokemon and Gameboys!

Playing Streets of Rage on a friends Sega Megadrive got me into console gaming.

Buying City of Heroes on a whim whilst in GAME. I never bought another console game after that and have played PC games ever since.
