Just bought myself an XBOX 360. a new premium one. HDMI output. Want to run it on my 24" gateway monitor, which has component inputs, and DVI and VGA.

i know VGA will only go up to 720p, but DVI will do full 1080 HD. But heres where im confused. What do i then do with Audio? are there HDMI>DVI cables that split the audio away like on the VGA one? help meee :(

if i used the composite, will it be high quality or is DVI better?

Thanks in advance

composite is possibly the worst video connection known to man lol, i presume you mean component? if so then DVI should be better as its a purely digital signal like HDMI

I believe you can get an adapter that gives you the option to use spdif audio output when using HDMI

alternativly you can mod the component cable you get with the 360 so you can plug that and the HDMI into the 360 at the same time so you can use the spdif output from that (i think you had to remove some of the outer casing of the component cable plug)

EDIT: I think this link should be ok http://www.chadledford.com/?p=50

DVI is better on my TV than component (not composite) but for others its different.

Just get a cheapo HDMI to DVI cable to go from 360 to monitor. Mine was 12 quid for 2 metres.

What are you using for sound? PC, Amp etc etc??

Either way, you can either buy the official audio adpater for the 360 or break the casing off a 360 VGA or Component cable like this

This allows you to have both the HDMI cable (for video) and the standard cable plugged in for sound.

Ive just bought it...dont wanna be taking things apart tbh.

So the cables im on about dont even exist? the HDMI to DVI and red/white audio?

My xbox will do more than 720p over Vga. Is this some limit on your monitor that means it will only accept 720p ?

When i tried my mates via the VGA cable it wouldnt do 1080 properly. even on my 24" monitor and on 1:1 pixel mapping, it was cropping most of the image out. hmm.

thats stupid, i wuda thought those cables would exist as i bet a lot of people would have use for them..

would the Component do HD properly?

hi,
i've just bought a hdmi to dvi cable and modded the existing component cable to still allow audio out to my receiver, it literally took 2 minutes....was simply a case of taking one side of the plastic cover off to allow the hdmi cable to fit. really pleased with the difference in picture quality and well worth considering.

component will do HD just fine (its essentially the same as VGA) so that would probably be your best bet from a not wanting/needing to spend any more money point of view, plus you'll have L and R phono plugs :)

VGA will do 1080p but depending on what tv your using, not all TV's accept 1080p via vga. though it should work on a 24" monitor

yeah, with regards to sharpness etc. i was thinkin more that their both just analogue signals lol

personally VGA looks better for me than component, but i guess its down to your own preference of you think looks good on your screen

you do get an adapter with the official hdmi cable which plugs into the component/vga bit underneath the hdmi port on the back of the xbox which has the outputs for optical and the red and white right/left audio cables

The cheapest i have seen this on the high street is £30 though so shop around

ahhh
right thanks for the help guys,

one more thing, I think ive heard from somewhere that using the component cables make it all ghosted and blurred, is that true?

ill see what component is like for me, then might have to purchase that HDMI audio splitter thingy, so i can use DVI. Thanks again :)

I personally am using a HDMI to DVI converter, then use the standard composite (YES I MEAN COMPOSITE) cables from the standard AV out to plug in to a hi fi for sound. (I mean the red / white cables).

*EDIT*

Ignore - for some reason I thought the op was talking about a PS3 :/

thats the back of it. Is the lil one under HDMI the audi output or soemthing?

Hmmm, got it all setup now with component inputs. its extremely dark, had to turn brightness all the way up and drop the contrast considerably in order to get an 'okish' view. Hoping HDMI>DVI wil be better.

One thing im concerned about though, when im using the HDMI output on the 360 for video, will it still let me use the normal A/V cable for sound output? surely the 360 will try and chuck the audio out of the hdmi too? :(

Any help would be great
