I went for the 9800GTX as I was desperate for something new to play with, my o/c BFG 8800GT OC could handle pretty much anything apart from crysis at my gaming res of 1920x1200.

Big disapointment was the mem wouldnt go above the stock 2.2ghz, core I got up to 790Mhz.

My 8800GT was clocked as per sig, for a single slot cooler I think I got pretty lucky with this one.

3dmark06 went from 14000 to 14800
Crysis (1280x1024 high 64bit dx9) went from 44.37 to 53.74
World in conflict (1920x1200) went from 22/11/42 to 23/11/47

In short I was very disapointed, I guess I have been spoilt by the good overclock I got out of my GT, that coupled with the very poor ram overclock of the 9800gtx
 
I know the 9800GTX is just a GTS with higher clocks but a 9fps (20%) increase in Crysis is nothing to be sniffed at.

Still not worth the extra money over the GT but still a good gain IMO.

I am surprised you were expecting anything differenet tbh
 
Your missing the point really tbh, the GTX big gain over any GT or GTS is the stream processors and probably most of all the memory bandwidth (bus width). The GT is only 112 streams/600MHz clock/1600MHz memory/50GB bandwidth whereas the 9800 GTX is a huge 128/675/2200/70GB. If you use synthetic benchmarks alone such as the 3DMark06 you will get an apparently small difference, but the difference in the real world usage, look and feel is really quite large. I have used and overclocked every G80 and G92 card released and always felt the GT was a benchmark killer, but not actually as good a card as even tje older and much lower scoring 320 GTS. Its a distinction ATI like to make about their cards over nVidia for similar reasons, and it does have some merit in it.

20% sounds like a lot until you put it in to some kind of context. ie, 20% of 42 is 9....which is nothing. even worse though, thats the highest frame rate your quoting right? the average went up a whole 1 frame per second. 2.5% in other words, which is below useless lol.

I think the increase of 9fps was from the average. There aren't any other results up on the OP's post about Crysis other than that :confused:

A better ram overclock than 0mhz was what I was expecting :D
 
Have to agree about the 9800GTX, very dissapointing.

Got one on the cheap so gave it a shot and it is rubbish.

Gone back to my 8800GTS.

Max artifact free OC I could get was 765/2350/1900

Which is barely better than the 750/2200/1900 I get on my 8800GTS...

What the extra 2" of PCB and 2nd power connector actually do is anyones guess...:rolleyes:

I rate you as a dependable source as I do the others that I have seen report that 1920x1200+ wasn't as good as you're suggesting but this depends on settings used, the system of the user and the games played.

So I don't believe your post as in all games at 1920x1200 are fine with the 8800GT but I do agree that some are fine. The GTS 512mb covers this resolution a little bit better and the GTX the best from all the reviews I've seen. I've not had the pleasure of tinkering with the G92 GT or GTS so I'm not one to be talking through experience but I do read a fair bit.

Have to say crysis and WIC are the only games I cant play at 1920x1200 with my GT

Only game that it really doesn't handle at 1920x is crysis - there may be other games I don't play...

COD4 1920x with all settings maxed rarely drops to 40fps (start of some missions with large views over cities, etc.) and is mostly around 80-120 even in firefights.

Oblivion, ETQW, BioShock and several other fairly recent games that I've played all run acceptably on an OC'd 8800GT at 1920x with max settings and 4x FSAA - tho admittedly its much better at resolutions below 1680x.

I was saying those crysis framerates are Average framerates, not max or min....
