Tax Rebate

Hi guys,

Anyone succesfully claimed a tax rebate and how did you go about it?

I finished my placement last July but was taxed for April, May, June and July as if I was going to earn the same for the entire tax year. Therefore, I've calculated I'm due a rebate.

How do I go about reclaiming this? The HM Customs and Excise website suggests it should, through PAYE, be automatically adjusted throughout the year - but as I finished employment there (but continued to work elsewhere) this never took place.

Anyone had any experience?

I've always been told that you contact your local Tax Office and they sort it out for you, took a mate of mine about 3 weeks to get the rebate as he was on an emergency tax code for about 6 months. He got about £2k.

I'm in a similar position, I think they owe me ~£700, I was under the impression they'd send me a cheque automatically, but gonna give them a call mid-next week if I've still not received anything...

I believe as much as possible they try and adjust your tax code rather than pay a rebate. Make sure to ask for a cheque if that is what you want.

Wait for end of year P60 (iirc - the end of year tax status [stating NI and tax payments]) and then fill in a R40 and then expect some sort of cheque back in 2-4 weeks

Yea it's about that for me as well - yours was a placement as well? I left it after I finished the placement as it seemed you couldnt claim it back immediatly if you were planning to work again in the same tax year. Which I did - but not significantly enough to really affect the rebate due.

Yeah from my placement, Worked from April till mid-September. Reading the website again This Site seems to imply that actually you do need to fill in a P50 and send that along with pages 2 and 3 of the P45 to get any refund back, guess I'll be doing that on Monday :)

Unless you're employed by the company at the tax year end you will not get a P60!

Fox, just contact your tax office, they'll sort you out!

Oh how I love these threads with loads of incorrect information..... So to answer the questions asked, and correct information, see below.....

Fox... it's HM Revenue & Customs. Customs & Excise, and the Inland Revenue have not existed for a few years now.

When you left your placement you should have been given a P45. YOu should then have given this to your new employer, and then by the end of the year, your tax would have been correct.

As you didn't, you will need to wait until your current employer (assuming youa re still working) gives you your P60 (the have to give you this by mid May), and then send that and your P45 with a covering letter detailing who you worked for and when, and covering any periods when you were not working (remember to state if you claimed any benefits or not) to your tax office.

If you are not currently employed, then send a similar letter, but send all the P45s you got during the year.

You will NOT get your refund as an adjustment to this years code. It does not, and will not work like that. The only time you get a refund through your pay is when your code changes during the year, or your pay drops by a large amount, or if you work at the beginning of the year, not in the middle, and again at the end. As last year has finished you will get a cheque, or it paid into your bank account if you provide your bank account details.

Skill - Your best bet is doing what I have told Fox to do.

Vanilla - HMRC will not issue a refund by way of adjusting a tax code. See above.

ste_bla - You will not need to complete an R40. This form is designed for those who are claiming a refund on tax paid on investment income. All you need to do is write a letter as per my instructions to Fox.

dark_shadow - You can claim up to 5 years and 10 months after the end of the tax year you are claiming for. So the earliest you can now claim for is the 2002-03 tax year.

I went down to the local tax office, explained what I wanted to claim back - filled out the form they gave me, gave them part of my p45 and then they sent it all off.

Few weeks later I got a cheque through the post.

I think this is slightly different though, as i was the tax i was claiming back had been added onto the amounts on my p45.

Ah thanks chippie :D

I'm at work tomorrow morning, what should I request off HR before I call up HMRC?

You should already have all the information you need to claim any refund you are due for previous years, as you are given payslips, P45s when you leave jobs and P60 at the end of each tax year.

If you have lost your P45s from previous employers, you should tell HMRC that in your letter, as they will probably already have the details. Same for the P60s, although you can ask your employer to issue you a duplicate, or give you a statement of earnings for each year.

When I was in a similar situation, I contacted my payroll office, asked for the address of the local tax office, and wrote them a letter explaining the sitution, enclosing a copy of my P60.

A week later, I got a cheque for £770 in the post, winner!
