Usualy i find these types of shows boring, but the first part of this series had me hooked, and the end sequence what kind of animal was that he was about to enter via the stomach. Crazy stuff.

Was it Bear who was caught out by somebody when he was found checking in to his hotel every night whilst doing his series?

Yes but I don't see why that matters, he knows what he's doing and is an expert.

Bear Grylls = Extreme survival
Ray mears = bush craft and how to live comfortably of the land.

I do prefer ray mears, but they aren't really the same.

not really keen on his shows

although i did watch his Everest paraglide one

found it quite amusing as it all seemded very amateurish , like his friend taking out a machine that had never even been tested, having an altimeter that couldnt withstand the cold and not realising they would need anti freeze during the extreme cold and wind tunnel testing

I much prefer Ray Mears, he's calculated and intelligent.
Bear Grylls is just a nut job who eats live stuff and runs around like a loony.
He's a lot more honest this time about it this time as he's up front about it being set up.

Personally I thought it was really good.

Every time this discussion comes up people should remember this. They are not the same thing. Mears doesn't teach "survival", it's one of the first things they explain to you.

I have a great deal of respect for Bear Grylls but his shows annoy me. Granted, it's done for entertainment sake but I'd rather watch Ray Mears and possibly learn something I might use one day.

I think 'Surviorman' is better than this or Ray Mears.

I've never seen it over here, but it was on all the time when I lived in Canada. It's about a regular guy called Les Stroud who gets put in a simulated situation such as a plane crash, breakdown, lost at sea etc.

He then has to survive for a week and he does all the filming himself without a crew. It was really good and much more genuine than anything Grylls has done.

Bear Grylls stays in 5 star hotel rooms inbetween staged 'survival' sessions and eats pre-prepared stuff instead of the real deal right there, with few exceptions. The guy's show is a crock and a sham.

Haha

Seems his "extrene" survival tips aren't as good as you'd think fellas :)

Its not just him he looking out for its TV crew aswell most stuff is staged for camera but dosnt mean the guy dont know what he doing. Even Ray Mears has it easy in shows i seen him staying at places i might be watching wrong shows here but ive hardly seen him out there so to speak as Bear is.

If you think he really is phony watch some of his stuff he been into dangerous locations i mean you cant really fake open swamp which crocodiles or god knows what could pop up from water anytime in them places.

Even if it is staged i really dont think the whole show is thats for sure i mean look at some of places cant fake that at end of day all he has to do is show survival techniques and that what he does.

Well said, Ray Mears all the way

I can't find the video but I saw one a while ago which compared Bear Grylls to Survivorman I think (some US TV show), it basically showed that lots of Bears 'tips' would get you killed.

His shows are still entertaining though. :)

Read the wiki quoted above, its shows nearly everything dangerous is not actualy dangerous and especially look at the edited voice overs by discovery backing it up.

it's a shame I thought it was good. :(

I watch Bear for entertainment. He's exciting, has some useful tips but also carries out a lot of impressive physical feats such as climbing and going into ice-covered lakes. Ray Mears is quite boring to be honest.
