I was wondering what the clause would be or whats stopping me insuring one car fully comp with the ability to drive any other car with the owners permission 3rd party, and running around in a second car (owned by me) with no insurance on it.

I realise you cant do this, but I just wondered where the line is drawn?
Also getting tax may be a problem once a year.

you can but your exploiting a loophole, and your only covered 3rd party.

////awaits the its legal/illegal debate to kick off///

It's exactly this reason why insurance companies are withdrawing DOC (Drive Other Cars) cover from their policies.

You will find that they will often state that it's for cars "not owned by or hired to" the policyholder - meaning you can't buy a 2nd, more expensive car, and run it.

well the 2nd car doesn't have insurance. there's the problem?

depends on the wording of your policy

some say can drive any other vehicle as long as its insured others just say any other vehicle not belonging too, wheras my trade policy says any vehicle belonging or not belonging too ;)

If you transferred one of the cars to someone else, then you would probably get away with it. Tax isnt really an issue as you could simply buy tax on a covernote and then cancel.

I always thought DOC only applied to cars with existing insurance policies...

Awaits *read your policy* brigade, and yet, i dont actually have DOC.

On my insurance you can't do this while you own the car, but you can do it while someone else owns the car.

For example I drove the 306 I have now round for about 3 months while the last owner (a friend of mine) wasn't insured on it. It was insured while I was behind the wheel of it so it was OK, I even checked with my insurance company on that.
As such you have to leave it parked either on your drive or in a private car park as technically you cannot leave it on the public highway as without you in it, it's uninsured.

You can only drive a car third party under DOC if it is not owned by you or leased to you.

Note, this means OWNED BY YOU. Not that you are the registered keeper. So pretending its your Dads wont work.

I take it running 2 Jags is hurting the pocket? It always was a stupid idea!

I've considered it in the past but always took the safe option and took out a second policy.

Insurance companies don't like it and getting tax is difficult but unless their DOC clause mentions that the car must not be owned by you (insurers vary on this) then legally you can get away with it to the point where the police are happy that you're covered however I wouldn't like to have an accident in such a situation as I can forsee the insurance company being reluctant to pay out.

Theres also an issue that you could never park the second car in any public place because as soon as you leave the vehicle your TPO no longer applies and you've got an uninsured vehicle on the public highway....

/EDIT - took too long typing that, stonedofmoo mentioned the parking thing.

In theory though given that we can only ever drive one car at once I dont understand why you cannot insure two cars for just a nominal additional fee over the cost of insuring the highest risk one. Instead even with a multicar policy you end up paying more or less double.

Why? If I have two cars and only ever drive one the most it would cost the insurer extra is the cost of insuring, TPFT only, the other car whilst its parked up..
