I have a 2 bed flat in glasgow. Its small and only has 1 person living it.

I have been paying back an overdue bill for the pas 5 months. In total ive paid around 900GBP.

Ive just recieved a bill stating that i still owe them 700GBP. WHAT!

Anyone willing to tell me what their bills are like?
Are these too high?

I have a PC, fidge, cooker, lights...i have a tumble dryer and a dishwasher but dont use them regularly.

So in 5 months you've paid £900 and still owe £700?

That's what, £1600 so a £320 / month bill. That's about £260 / month more than we pay for 3 of us, with several computers and laptops on most of the day as well as all the other standard stuff. About our only concession to energy efficiency is energy saving lightbulbs in all rooms.

I think you may be paying a little too much. :)

Edit, wait a sec, that's for all our utilities (gas, electric and water), so you really ARE paying a fortune if that's just for electricity.

There's 3 of us here and we have 2 PCs and TVs on for 12+ hours a day, washing machine and dishwasher on once every few days, the oven often used twice per day, 2 freezers and only 1 energy saving lightbulb... All that and our electric is about £40 a month right now and that's on the expensive side. So yes, I'd say £320 a month is a little high :p

Yes but his flat is in Glasgow (unless there is a Glasgow in Canada?) - that seems outrageously expensive! Have you checked the meter readings? Have you spoken to them?

Did you take a meter reading when you first moved in? If you know that, and what it is now, they can work out exactly how much should have been paid. That's absolutely ridiculous! No hidden SETI farms under the bed? :p

Im in canada. Moved 3mo ago but my sis lives in the apartment

Ive requested an inspection of the meter but they want payment in full or they will take me to court. Im pretty sure if i pay it ill never see the money again

Ive owned the place for 7 years. Elec bills have always been high but not THAT high. Usually 200ish a quarter

Has she been using one of those hideously inefficient electric heaters?

The girls in my house have them in their rooms even though we have central heating. I want to beat them to death every time I hear them whirring away, it's like burning money.

Unless you are Growing something in your spare bedroom they are having your pants down. Ring them & get them out to check the meter.
I am in a 3 bed terraced house & only have Electric & spend around 15 quid a week on Leccy. Up to 100 quid a month would be acceptable if you had a family but a single bloke shouldn't really use any more than 15 quid.
If you have a debt with them you Probaby have the option for a key card meter to be installed at no cost to you. Although the Leccy is slightly more expensive this way you get to monitor your own usage. I use a fiver less a week now i have the key meter which saves me money & makes me feel better about the Planet.

electric heater and oil heaters are a big no no.....used to work for a power company and in this situation you would be asked to take reading over 7 days, they would look for any particular days where the usage is high and ask you what electrical appliances you were using on that particular day, if its constantly high over the 7 days you then have the right to request your meter to be checked, engineer will turn up and leave a hand held meter plugged in to compare readings...be warned though as if there is nothing wrong with the meter i think they can charge you for this service. It sounds absolutely ridiculous what your paying when you describe the appliances being used...something aint right.

I have a 2 bedroom flat where i stay with my fiancee and little boy, got all the mod cons and extra plus i'm one of those guys who never turns anything off at the plug:D..got central heating right enough but my electricity is around £50 - £60 a month

How much does your electricity cost per unit? You might be on a non-contracted rate, something stupid like 20p a unit

Do you do your own readings? Did you do one when you moved in? Do one now?

it's far too expensive, how long have you been in there? not taken on some of the last persons debt?

happened to me once

the meter reader guy who come here every 3 months, he read the meter wrong and got a bill of £400 LOL so i phone british gas and update with correct meter value, all sorted

2 bed flat, 2 people living here. Almost always got the computers running, LCD tv, xbox etc on most of the time too.

Electric for the last quarter was something like £80

Paying £30 a month for gas & electricity. With 2 computers, fridge/freezer, running all the time. Mind, not much else is used.

I'm in a one bed flat on the west coast of scotland, I'm £33.50 a month for Gas and Electricity. I have:
An electric shower, oven and hob.
A tropical Fish tank with heater and pump running 24 hours
A desktop PC running 24 hours a day
A 42" Plasma TV on for 6 to 8 hours a day
an Xbox 360
A Wii
A PS3
A laptop

You are defo getting robbed there mate. I would refuse to pay the bill until the meter has been checked. Are these bill worked out from reading or estimates. Have your sister phone in an actual meter reading.

Our last Quarterly bill was £200 for Elec & Gas combined.

2 Bed house with 3 pc's on at least 12-16hrs a day, washing machine, tumble dryer etc....

sounds like a reading has been phoned in, but many years of estimated readings?

IF THIS IS THE CASE, electricity companies can only back-charge for a maximum of 12 months, if they have failed to reasonably obtain an accurate meter reading
