PS3 with 100gb

Just tried this with another hard disc and it does indeed only read the first partition - bit of a pain as that messed up my orignal backup plans!

That is the exact figure mine said for the 320GB drive. It's normal I guess. (I don't recall what my 60gb used to say when it was new though to compare).

Nope that's not it, its showing a total of 298gb (which would be the actual size of the 320gb hard disc), but its showing over 30gb in use.
I can only assume the PS3 has reserved it for something as its the same for rp2000...
Looks like my backup is corrupt, will have to try restoring it another time.
Yes only FAT32, limit of 4gb on files and if you format the drive within Windows you'll be limited to 32gb partitions - but if you use a third party tool then you should be able to format the entire 500gb as a single FAT32 partition.
I've now managed to destroy the heads of two of the screws on the hard drive caddy in a fit of rage while trying to put the orignal hard disc back in so I now have a hard disc stuck in the caddy

After it restarts I get a message saying the file system is corrupted and will be restored which then formats the hard disc again. I've taken 3 backups now to different hard discs and all result in the same problem... maybe the new hard disc is dodgy (unlikly though).
Not really sure where to go from here, looks like I may be downloading all the data again and manually copying accross what I can.

What are you backing up? For reference I deleted all music and videos before the backup. (Leaving only pictures, game saves, game data and games).

I'm backing up everything I had on there, so Videos, Music, Pictures, Game Saves, Game data and Games. I may try again with out Videos, Music and Pictures to see what happens...
If I look at the backup files on the PC its almost like theres two sets of backup files archive (total of 1.65gb) and archive2 (total of 31.2gb), it's like its stopping when switching between these two sets (I guess one is game data and the other video etc). There's not much information around on this at all which doesn't help.
Is it possible it does it 32gb chunks (like Norton Ghost splits at the 2GB mark etc) and your second chunk is corrupt? (The smaller one). In which case removing some crap the backup (so you have less to backup and only 1 file is created?). Cos mine just worked I did not even look at the file structure on my USB HDD. I will check it in an hour if it will help. My backup was around the 30GB mark.

That could well be it, I'll try to get it under the 30gb mark and take another backup to see if that helps.
Ah well, it didn't work. The only data I backed up this time was game related stuff and it still makes "two" sets of archive files - this time the 'archive' set was 104mb and the 'archive2' was 26.9gb (I deleted some game data which is why this is smaller than above, to make sure I was under 30gb) - It looks like it's as I originally thought, all the Game related data is 'archive2' and other stuff is in 'archive'.
It fails the restore after the first few percent so I'm almost certain it’s something going wrong when it switches from 'archive' to restoring from 'archive2' - so I either have a gamedata file which it doesn't like restoring or something else is going wrong here. There seems to be so little information available on this error so I can only assume it's a really rare occurrence - maybe I'll have to get in contact with Sony next week to see what they say.

Gonna give up on this one, it's some DRM related issue I think - self inflicted I guess since I choose the wrong "restore" option initially so wiped my settings and user accounts (though that doesn't really make sense since I restored my accounts by putting the orignal hard disc back in so the new backup's I've since made shouldn't know any different).
I've managed to get the backup to restore any Media files I have and Save Games gives but just refuses to restore the actual game data I have - it gives a slightly different error now '800283F0', after it gets so far in it suddenly jumps to 100% and says the restore failed but it then proceeds to rebuild the hard disc structure after which Media/Save games are avaliable again.
So lots of downloading off PS Store to come On the bright side though the Metal Gear Beta is still up to download so will hopefully have that to play with until GTA arrives.
My advice to anyone thinking of upgrading their hard disc - don't use the wrong restore option
