Why do we pay our taxes?

We pay our taxes because we have no choice, taxation is legalised theft.

The reason I keep getting drawn back to this forum is that it has such an entertaining cross section of wildly uninformed viewpoints. Mine included. ;-)

Tax is one of those unpleasant things in life, like taking a dump. You might not like doing it, but try *not* doing it for a while and see what happens.

PS Evan... I'm currently at the unfashionable western end of Kent, the garden of England*. And all gardens need a bonfire, don't they? I was woken by a <bang!> which rattled the windows early on Easter Monday 2007, to discover it was the petrol tank on what used to be a car going off. It was all rather 'exciting'. The picture was taken from my kitchen window, and it was nice to have a view for a change. It made a change from the back of the doctors' surgery.

*Or the fly-tipping capital of England as I prefer to think of it when going for a walk around the local lanes.

I agree that the police are a complete waste of space. In my opinion half the problem is the quality of recruit - it is now a career choice for those who can't think what else to do. Round here they're all just little boys.

Well its an interesting question. Leaving your story about Britains declining social system aside, its still a good question. Personally i dont use any public service as far as i can think of it, i have private healthcare, have never claimed benefit, dont use subsidised public transport, and the public services i do use such as refuse collection are covered when i pay council tax, or road tax, or my television licence.

So in effect im getting taxed for things i dont use, then getting charged a second time for the things i do. It all leads to the feeling that i must be supporting someone else, and i resent that. I'd much rather live in a country where you pay for only what puvlic services you actually want to use.

.

The police are utterly useless round here, what if the lads had had knives or it had kicked off, the police certainly wouldn't have been there to do anything.

I'm assuming you mean the police service is useless rather than the policemen/women? If so, i'd have to agree.

First of all, i don't think there will be as many police on on a sunday, secondly the remaining officers that are on are probably not just sitting on their arse doing nothing. Maybe they're filling out that all important paperwork which will take the next 4 hours? Or they're round at some retarded domestic incident, which will take an hour or two to process.

Blame the stupid government that are slowly strangling the police/education system/economy etc

He was probably so drunk he can't remember where he left his car *wink wink*

Besides, obviously the police are occupied with other things, so if it was to go missing I'm sure there would be plenty of time for someone to cover up their tracks.

Mate was getting his shed broken into he called police they said it will be about an hour and someone will come. He kept all his tools and work stuff in there and was not about to let it get taken. He phoned back and said look it looks like a teenager trying to break in and im 6'5 and 18 stone if you dont send a car now you will need an abulance aswell. The came rightaway.

The police are ****, get used to it, I work in an off licence, the other week a bloke and a group of youths were fighting outside the shop, really rough, then fall into the shop through the door and this stupid youth starts to pick up beer crates and drop them on this guys head. Then he shouts to his mates to get a knife, and this point me and the other guy throw him out the shop and slam the door shut quicker than his mates could run to the door and they start kicking the door in, luckly its re-enforced so they dont get far. OBVIOUSLY we call the police on 999 nevermind through the security firm we have that does stuff like monitor cctv, as this was a proper emergancy, response times was , you guessed it 40 MINS !..............ridiculous, these guys also stood around outside hurling what they could at the shop for 20 mins, if the police responded as necessary, they would have caught them.

I was livid, I said to the policeman, maybe I should have said I saw a car do 31mph in the 30mph zone? would have had helecoptors, SAS, the works then eh !

He laughed sheepishly and actually agreed, apparently there was a police car and officers about a mile away who could have responded but there a different department !?!!?!?! WHAT NOW, all we needed was a police presence there, doesnt matter if ones catching so called 'dangerous drivers' and others are not, police are police end of day.

The only time i ever rung the police they arrived in a few mins, but the situation would expect as much and the distress i was in needed needed some assistance.

They are too busy doing nothing at that time of the night to care...

Same story as with me for the first one. Some guy knocked on my door telling me to phone the police cause there was a stoned guy falling over his car. I phoned them, and within a couple of minutes they arrived.

I disagree with the "they are too busy/they have more important things to worry about" arguments some people are putting forwards. This was 11-12 on a Friday night, and hardly a major crime - I was only 13 at the time, and didn't know the police had another number, which is why I called 999, before anyone has a go for calling the emergency one.

all you had was some drunks arguing. we get that every night in our street in newcastle lol

it was 2am on a saturday night. probably the polices busiest time of the week. im sure they actually where doing more important things for once

just because your town is "normallyy" quiet shouldnt make you more in need. the guy getting his head kicked in/stabbed/hit by a drunk driver outside a club pays his taxes too

Should have nipped down the road to Leamington Spa. On thursday night just after 3am there was about 6+ police cars/vans on the parade. All the Kenilworth police were probably there :p

Another great OcUK police bashing thread !

As a former Special Constable I know just how busy the last weekend of the month is, the majority of people have just been paid. You have the usual raft of domestic assualts, random assaults in and around the pubs, drink drivers, RTC's, RTC's with drunk drivers etc.

The patrol was probably on it's way when it got diverted to a more serious incident, unfortuneate but the reality of a finite resource.

There's no clubs in Kenilworth, which is the point I'm trying to make here.
Our local police station is open 9am - 5pm and closed on Sundays...the police force in this town are a complete joke.

I would understand if I lived in Leamington or Coventry where there is a booming nightlife, but at that time of morning in Kenilworth NOTHING is open...literally.

So what were KTPD up to then?!

the petrol station is, that crazy old woman...ask her to get you stuff and tell her you dont want it, she goes mental.
