going out with my mate tonight for a heavy session, only started goin out drinkin with him again recently and boy has it been tough, we have been drinkin from about 9pm to about 6am the next morning, im usually in bed for 2am at the latest when i go out with my other mates.

now my gf has just texted be askin if i want to go shooting tomorrow, shotgun, clay pigeon. to my reply was, "ill be dyin, but hell yea"

is this a wise move seein as i will be in charge of a fire arm at about lunchtime tomorrow? how hard is it?

ps this is my first time with a gun that shoots real ammo

I'm assuming that you will be with someone who holds shotgun cert then.

Its not that hard really but personally if its your first time I'd advise against having a skinful tonight.

Once you've done clays for a while you can start to read the trajectory quite easily and remember that they are always slowing down, you can almost wait for them when you become more skilled.

If you get someone clever on the trap, they can mix clay sizes to give you more to do.

Don't fight the gun, try to use a smooth arc and don't stop to take the shot as you'll be behind the clay.

Good luck and have fun.

I really don't get these sort of threads. How difficult is it to pace yourself while drinking to make sure that you don't get hungover the next day? It won't kill you to not be completely wasted for one night.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much, a lot of the top shots I know claim that the best way to approach a competition is to have a skin full the night before. (In no way am I saying you should be shooting while under the influence of alcohol).

Although as it’s your first time there will be a lot to learn so perhaps it would be a good idea to take the drinking easy tonight. Just relax and don’t get too hung up on how many you hit at first.

Any other questions?

just don't do a Dick Cheney and shoot the people your with :p

but seriously I'm sure you can miss a session with the lads to shoot a gun?

Well I was always better at Quake when drunk :D

But seriously, either don't drink (much) or don't shoot. Don't mix the two.

Are you going to a range where you hire the gun? If so and if they smell drink on you they might not let you shoot. If you stop drinking at 6am, chances are that you will still be drunk by the time you go shooting. Otherwise you'll be grand. My da and myself always carry a hipflask of whiskey when we go shooting and usually end up half cut by the time we're done.

Is it Tannyoky you're going to?

I did the second day of my pistol safety course after having had a skinful with the instructor the night before. But it was only a skinful, I knew to stop before it started overflowing and I made sure I drank about three pints of water and popped a couple of profen before I went to bed.

Don't get totally wasted because you'll regret it, it's not just the hangover making you feel crap, if you've never used a shotgun before then you will suffer badly from the recoil and the sound and the headache will just get worse.

What? That's kind of worrying really. I'm sure the police wouldn't be too happy about that, and they certainly wouldn't have issued a shotgun certificate if they knew you would be drinking whisky whilst shooting.

What? Seriously? The police go through rigorous background checks, mental health checks, criminal records, interviews, third party references, insepections of your storage facilities, all in the name of safety, but they wouldn't mind that you consume highly alcoholic beverages whilst shooting?

The checks are pretty rigorous but in reality a shotgun certificate is easy to get. I don’t know what the police stance is, but its common practise.
