I want an XBOX 360 but it scares me :(

Get a 360, just make sure its the falcon chipset.

Im on my 4th 360, although its an elite this time with the falcon chipset. Thankfully it runs extremely cool compared to my previous 3 "brand new" xboxs that failed(not refurbs). So im optimistic that it will not overheat. It barely spits out any heat, despite an allday session on GTA 4.

My PS3 has a stunning build quality, but its only usefull as a blu ray player if you have a 360 already.

I'm buggered if i'm paying £280 (or whatever they currently sell for) for a console and then another £60 for a 2year warranty because the manufacturer is sending unreliable crap out of the factory door.

Seriously this issue needs sorting out!

Edit: Looking at things, the PS3 isn't really as overpriced as people are making out, if you take into consideration that the build quality is better than that of the 360, Multiplayer and blue-ray out of the box.

For example:

Xbox 360 Premium - £270
Xbox 360 HD DVD Player - £110
2 Year Guarantee - £60
Xbox Live Sub - £40

Total = £480

You can get a PS3, HDMI Cable and a Blue Ray Movie for £400

Try £170 for the Pro

Even though this is an old thread I'd have to say to anyone who is thinking about buying any console but not sure... JUST BUY IT... Stop thinking and just buy whichever console your friends have. The longer you sit there thinking about it the less time you have playing it. Consoles are relatively cheap and you get a LOT of entertainment out of them. Go go!

Spot on. I got my 360 on launch day and its still running fine. I bought a PS3 when the 40 gig model/price cut came out. It lasted a week before the Bluray drive packed in. No big deal, Game replaced it for another.

Aye, they have a chance to break just like anything else you buy. I wish I'd not waited this long to get my PS3 - I just got it Tuesday with GTA4. I was undecided which to get, then if it was worth it etc. Now I finally have it I just wish I'd done it months ago! And if it breaks? So what? It's got a warranty :)

You might want to edit out that competitor mate.

As with any piece of electronic equipment, it's hit and miss whether or not your 360 goes faulty before its time. The best piece of advice I could give (despite what some other forum members may think) is to purchase one from a high street electronics retailer and get the extended warranty along with it. If it went faulty slightly over a year of use, you COULD spend your time wrangling with the SOGA, but to be honest the warranties from these places on the 360 is cheap enough to make it worth the less hassle.

The online play for 360 is fantastic and really defines the next generation of consoles as far as I'm concerned. If you're considering getting one, then you NEED one. No ifs or buts about it.

K, I never been much of a console fan for years (last console being a Gamecube) since my Snes and Megadrive, also played about with a N64 which was a bad purchase.

Anywhoz, I want a console to play online games. I would usualy always go for Nintendo as the quality of there games are always amazing, but most there games seem to be party type games and my friends are mostly not into computers so I guess a Wii would be pretty crap for playing by yourself.

I've never really liked Playstations as there quality control is crap and will let any game get on it.

So I kinda decided on an Xbox 360, In the past I never seen the point due to owning a quite decent PC system. However there does seem to be some great games which take too long to come to PC and I like this whole Xbox Live thing as playing Multiplayer is my type of thing.

I like singleplayer games but I always stick around for a multiplayer side of things.

Yeah I'm typing too much... so to the point............

Researching on the net before I make a purchase has thrown up some shocking scarey things about the 3 red light thing and games getting scratched in the CD player.

In short can anyone tell me how wide spread this is and if there has been any hardware revisions which has fixed this please?

If these issues have been fixed I would like to know when so if I buy an Xbox 360 I can look at the manufacture date to know that the console I buy was manufactured when these problems where fixed.

Also I still can not decide wether to buy 2nd hand or brand new, wether it would make any difference as not knowing if these problems have been fixed.

Also i hear figures of only 3% to 5% returns on them, but then others saying it is more like 75%, So I still do not know how much of a gamble I am taking on a purchase (has anyone NOT had a problem?).

Only twice a year (Birthday & Xmas) do I treat myself as otherwise I have no money so this is a big purchase for me and unlike last xmas when I bought an AMD x2 4800+ CPU for my PC to see no difference at all from my old AMD 3600+ CPU, I do not want to make another huge mistake (should have just bought an xbox 360 then).

Please let me know if you think I should go for an Xbox 360 as these problems are rare or if I should stay away from the Xbox 360 because of these problems (I will probabaly not buy a Wii or PS3 as they do not interest me) and just keep my money for maybe a new widescreen monitor (although this one is not widescreen but perfectly fine atm).

Most importantly if there has been a hardware revision to fix these problems as anyone got the date of manufacture so I know to buy one after that date please.

Also to buy 2nd hand or not is also a big concern and question for me as also a huge price difference but unsure if it goes wrong with three red lights where I stand for it being fixed.

Thank You for your time and response in advance.

Take care.

THX.

You type too much!! i read the title and yes your a little girl for worrying about a box of plastic and yes you should buy it, its a great console!

So many people replying with nonesense due to not reading the thread properly and realising it is an old thread from a year ago that I have posted in lately just to update to say it died within the 1st year (yesterday). So my concerns where warranted.

If it decided to die a month from now I would be totally screwed as it would have been outsaide of warranty (as far as I know E74 error not covered after 1st year? Unlike RROD.)

IN SHORT:

I grew some balls and bought an xbox360 a year ago after I originaly started this thread (as I posted later in this thread explaining and thanking my gran)
The console died on me yesterday with E74 error, luckily 3 weeks left on warranty (or I would have been screwed and gutted with no xbox360)

In a way I am very lucky as given another month I would have been out of warranty and out of luck and stuck with a brick and tons of games rendered useless as I can't afford repair or to buy a new one! SO CLOSE TO BEING COMPLETELY SCREWED.

GET ONE there awesome, and dont pay for extended warranty MS offer this free for 3 red lights, got mine replaced in a matter of days and they gave me a free months live access, never ever come across such good customer service, highly recommended

EDIT: Oh right you got one a year ago, and WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT, my 2 year old console died and they repaired it free!! its 3 YEARS ! not 1 !!

ive found the best defense is not to register the console then when it breaks MS take the registration num then register it from that date. this is certainly what happened to me when my disk drive broke after 15 months.
