Eurogamer: 360 > PS3 GTA4

Clearly that's not true unless the only reviews you've read are on PS3 sites and magazines...

Off the top of my head, both 1up and Giant Bomb have said the PS3 version has the slight edge.

Two of the most unbiased review sites on the net, and I'm willing to put there opinion before random message board peoples opinions.

But seriously, why am I even writing this, They practically Identical!

Burnout was the lead on PS3 so a port

well what does that tell you then ?, when its the other way around and the PS3 is the lead platform the the 360 version is technically inferior, its the reason why atm so many multi-platform games on the PS3 atm have been poorer because like I said, they've had the lead on the 360 thus far.

and Dirt came out months later after the 360 version so it had additional development time. (Which I believe Codemasters publicly stated they used to work on the PS3 version some more)

Yes I remember that but It still goes to show when the extra effort is put in the PS3's hardware does shine, and it did pay off because it ended up being the better version, we all know that the PS3 is allot harder to develop games on and usually requires extra tweaks etc.

But was GTA IV a port? I thought it wasn't?

Yes but how do you know the 360 version couldn't have been that much better with the extra development time?

It's really not a fair situation to judge from.

Hardly "90% of reviews" though is it....

I've got both versions, ran them at the same time using HDMI on both consoles, the 360 version does look and perform a bit better (well the Eurogamer comparison backs that argument up), what some reviews said about the PS3 having nicer colours is true however.

I honestly don't understand how some review sites crowned the PS3 the better version I mean come on it runs in a lower resolution for starters, the only real advantages I found on the PS3 was the quieter console, less pop-in and faster load times.

I'm not making this up either, I posted in the GTA thread a picture of both versions when I got them at the midnight launch.

You make it sound like the PS3 version of GTA4 is absolutely awful? There is basically no difference between the two, and 90% of reviews are saying the PS3 version is better, so either all those reviewers are wrong or your wrong.

Have you actually played both versions? I have and being honest there is no real difference between the two, nothing worth arguing over anyway.

Nope havent played both versions. I'm just looking at what other people (websites like eurogamer etc) have been saying when theyve been doing comparisons between ps3 and 360 games on crossplatform titles. (obviously also watching them myself)

I remember ages ago when people were saying that once developers get to grip with cell architecture and find it easier to program on the ps3 then we would definitely see evidence in ps3 games the real difference (ie read superiority) between the newer ps3 and the 360.

That evidence has not come to pass. And in future games coming to the ps3 i dont see evidence that it will. MGS4 imo looks very poor.

I should add that in no way do i think the ps3 gta version looks poor. I think it looks brilliant. There is hardly any difference at all between them. But its a tad disturbing that Rockstar had to resort to technical trickery to try to bring the PS3 version up to the same level as the Xbox 360 version. Now in all honesty shouldnt it be the other way round if truly the Cell is superior?

But i still regard the PS3 as the better choice over the 360 :)

You answered your own question tbh, since the reviews will be based on their opinion some will prefer less pop-in and slightly faster load times over slightly better graphics which is why they rated it as such.

As for the resolution, is it actually confirmed as being lower or is it still based off some "expert" on a forum, I've read conflicting stuff which suggests he's wrong.

Certainly a good point as I honestly don't understand how reviewers missed the framerate differences and the sharper 360 image.

and yeah I think it's still going from the guy on that forum. :p

It's really not a fair situation to judge from.

Dirt was developed using the PhyreEngine from SCE, although being a multi-platform engine it does take extra advantage of the PS3 architecture, thats why it was better on the PS3, not just because of the extra work involved, the extra development time usually needed on the PS3 is not an advantage, it's a downfall in fact, it's costs the developers or rather publishers hundreds of thousands to extend development, it's because the PS3 is harder to develop on.

Put it this way,

<puts on double strength fire proof jacket>

I think if a development team is making a game for both platforms and they have all the time in the world, no dead lines, either version of the game can come out before each other, and they actually take advantage of both systems architecture to the best of their ability, then I think every PS3 game would be equal or better, Do it think that R* utilised the PS3's architecture to their maximum capability's ?, not a chance in hell did they, the performance of their past games are proof of that, now I understand this is quite a bold opinion but it's an opinion none-the-less

Not entirely sure about that, doesn't the Xbox360 have the better GPU compared to the PS3's better CPU?

I certainly think they could get them running the same due to the extra bit of power in other places the PS3 has, but I'm not sure the tables could be reversed to the same standards as The Darkness for example.

Let us not forget, Rockstar just spent the last 5-6 months getting the PS3 version up to scratch.

I mean if anyone can get the best out of the ps3 its surely Rockstar? And if they couldnt do it (match the 360s performance level) then its clear that technically the 360 is better.
Are you having a laff?... Is he having a laff?

Rockstar are great at making GTA - they rule the way in the genre, but I wouldn't class them as a developer who get the most from any system technically!!! I recently played San Andreas on PC, and while it looked great (compared to PS2) it still suffered horribly from pop-up and my system has 4GB ram - what was all that about if they are THE company to get the most out of a system???

The 360's GPU is technically better than the PS3's GPU, but the PS3's CPU is technically better than the 360's CPU.

atm I could well agree, even with GTA IV atm this could be the case, but I believe as developers get to grips with the PS3 hardware they will be able to match it or even better it.

I still think they could've of done better, and not just on the PS3 version either, most people agree that both versions should be running better than they are now, I've personally never been a fan of the performance in R*'s games.
