Hi guys I'm trying to spec my friend a cheap upgrade and he only wants to spend about £50 on a PSU but needs to be as silent as possible. It will need to run a P4 3.2, 8800GT 512MB, 500GB F1. I thought maybe one of these but open to your wise suggestions, modular is a bonus but not essential, silent running is most important factor:

OCZ StealthXStream 500W

Corsair VX 450W

Akasa Ultra Quiet 500W Paxpower Active

Gigabyte ODIN PRO 550W

Thermaltake ToughPower 500W

Also is the 8800GT backwards compatible to PCIe 1.0 and will there be much of a performance hit?

TIA

yes it is, no it wouldn't and i am happy with my thermaltake (but its a 750), personally i would get the thermaltake, but i would rather get a hx520 for an extra 15 notes.

id go for the corsair if it was me. seems like a good price on a good psu. im also interested if the 8800gt(s) would work on a pcie 1.0 16x slot

i can't believe no one has mentioned this yet..... what's the point of getting a 8800gt for a p4 3.2ghz. the mind boggles.....

That's fairly true.

I'd also go for the Corsairs - they're very quiet too. In my system with serious temperature problems (don't ..ask), it's still whisper quiet which I suppose is good..

I know i know but he doesnt want to do a full upgrade yet but when he does the 8800GT will still be used so the fact that the CPU is the limiting factor at the moment is irrelevant. I am trying to convince him to upgrade the whole lot right now as it's only an extra £150 on top to get CPU RAM and MOBO so we'll see...
