I was all set on an lcd but looking at the plasmas it seems to make more sense, soooo....

Opinions on what to get for a total noob.
Viewing distance will be around 10ft
it will be wall mounted
Used for normal telly, dvd's and blueray
I would spend a bit more if there was a clear winner to get.
Thank you.:)

As I say time and time again good choice choosing plasma as it is superior vs LCD for tv, blu-rays and upscaled dvds.

At 10ft look into the 42 pioneer kuro as they can be had for just over £1100 and are still the best out there. But If you want a 50inch then check out the panasonic PZ70 50inch (which is also 1080p). But the picture on the pioneer is still better than that 1080p panasonic.

You will get that better 42 for your money, or get a bigger tv which will also look pretty damn good.

Hmm,

Panasonic TH-50PZ700 can be got for about £1300 which is 1080p though you'd probably be better off with the TH-50PX8 which is 720p and can be had for around £1200.

If you really want to push the boat out then a Pioneer PDP-5080XD can be had for just over £1600 and will blow everything else out of the water. Speakers are extra though.

As -Ad- has said though, if you want picture quality over impact, and you can't stretch much over £1000 then got for the 42" Pioneer - -Ad- and I both have that panel (I think) and it simply is the best TV available for that price.

the 42" panasonic pz80 can be had for £900 - it might not quite match the pioneer on black levels, but its pretty damn good and 1080p to boot, and at its price gives a lot more bang for the buck.

The 50" pz80 still isn't out yet, but should be within a few weeks, and is likely to be around the £1200 mark.

To make it a little more complicated theres also going to be a pz81 model of both sizes that features integrated freesat HD, although I've yet to see the prices yet.

Yup kuro rox my world :D

Dunno if panasonic do a PZ700 50inch, but I know the PZ700 42 is more expensive than the PZ70 and doesn't even to 1080p, weird panasonic. Bad panasonic !

But the new PZ80 panasonic should be a very nice tv as well, but then up at that pricelevel it's best to spend another few 100 on the 508XD pioneer which really is the best value tv out there with its astonishing PQ!!!

I should be a Pioneer rep :rolleyes::D

I would get the Panasonic 50PX80B or the Samsung PS-50A457.

I am getting the Samsung PS-42A457 delivered Weds, did have a 37PX80 but the two sets I had both had the same fault, JL & panasonic know about it but cant fix it.

e-mail in trust of you wanna chat more, or look at avforums for more info.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply's.
It is really a 50" I'm after.
I would go up to 1300 no more.

I've looked on the av forums but there is that much chat about such a huge number of models it's hard to make sense of it for a novice.
Thanks again.

Hehe ye:

'Advice samsung pposd75097305397842 VS. pio pdpdpx-42oe94905' :D

Check out the new LG screens as well, but the panasonic PX70 can be had for ONLY £800. Also go into JL and check out the tvs and try to buy from there as they will pricematch another store and you will get their excellent 5yr warranty.

Just seen you can get the new Pana PZ85B 46 inch for £1350 which is a great price for a tv that has just come out.

Still have a look at the 42 Pioneer, you will be surprised. Actually DON'T you will be too tempted :p

E-mail in trust if you need to chat about the weather, tvs etc ;)

Can be had for £800.

I've got a 42PX and would quite like to change it to a 50.

Not sure where you've seen the 50" for £800.

I've seen the 42" for around £700, but the 50" comes in at around £1000. Still, it's an excellent panel for the money. If I had room for 50" and couldn't stretch to the Pioneer it would be the only screen I would look at.

Strangely I didn't see it on Panasonic's website, so I thought it had been discontinued. Even if it has, it's still the best option for the money.

Highly recommended for you, FISHGUTS.

Ive got a Panny 50PZ70 and it's within your budget.

superb 1080p panel, picture quality is ace, blacks are ace....o.k it's not a Kuro but then it doesnt pretend to be.

The new PZ80's are out soon but for your budget i'd see if you can pick up a 1080p bargain.

**edit** after quick search i've found it for £1248.

You aint gonna do much better for a quality 50"

I've got the 50PZ70 and it's definately one my best buy's. The wife did nothing but complain that it was too big but after a few months i need to get a bigger one. I'll just have to move house first though.

LOL, I think our 42 is too small now and need a 50 :)

cunning
i bought the 50px70 from the film and insurance company, 799, £40 discount code, then £30 for 3 year warranty

They do some good deals from time to time. On my 42, I got 10% off discount code (the latest code only just expired), extended warranty by buying one of their cards plus I got some dosh back by going through quidco first.

The wife wants new white goods, fridge, washer, dryer. I want a bigger screeen, a Denon receiver and Quad surround sound :D Wimmin!

damn, forgot quidco!

and the tv was 1300 a couple of days ago, then they whacked it up to 1500 to knock 700 off

Well she can spend her money on them white goods, and you spend yours on the new AV.

Tell her that, but make sure to wear a stab vest :D

ok so we have........

Panasonic pz70
panasonic pz80 (out soon)
Pioneer PDP-5080XD
Panasonic 50PX80B
Samsung PS-50A457
and Lg which I presume is the 6000 series?(what are these like?)

What's the difference between the panasonics?

PZ70 - older generation of 1080p screens, cheaper than the PZ80.
PZ80 - Brand new screens out or coming out asap.
PX80 - Brand new screens, but are not 1080p. <------- Best value out there atm

Pioneer - The best :D
