I have a victorian internal door with many years of paint on it that I want to get back to the timber. What's the best way to strip the old paint, chemical stripper or heat gun?

Thanks

heat gun and scraper, then an electrical sander.

However the best bet is to find a local sand blaster and get him to do it for cash in hand. Ask at a bath/fire reclamation place for sandblasters

Look in yellow pages to find a local place that strips them in a caustic bath. It saves sooooo much effort and mess. All you have to do is re hang them and wash the door with white vinegar to neutralise and excess caustic

I'd be careful if you're going to dip and strip the door, the house we moved in had it done to the upstairs doors shortly before we moved in and they all warped.

Get the doors dip as suggested above. I have had this done and as long as it is sent to somebody with plenty of experience it will be fine. Also saves all the manual labour on your side

Blowlamp and a scraper, best way.

Nitromors is also an option but its not all that great.

nitromors?

Has no one ever heard off GOOGLE !

"Strips up to 15 layers" from the inside of your lungs!

Let's hope for some sunny weather again. DIYing in the sunshine of last weekend was outstanding.

i used to do this every day depending on size off job.i would go for caustic soda but be careful wear goggles rubber gloves and rubber apron.otherwise use nitromores ,metal scraper, and wire wool will take a lot longer though this way.when you feel something burning make sure you wash it straight away :p

make sure when youve finished stripping you rinse it off with water other wise any finish you try to apply will get eaten.

I cant remember where I saw this gadget but there is a tool that can be fitted to a drill which will strip paint off completely but not damage a single thing doing it and no chemicals or heat was involved. Its like a wheel with large bristles on it from what I remember.

Another way is to steam the paint off, my old man used to watch a lot of these house restoring programs on sky and there was a chap who could strip old doors and windows with nothing more than steam and it wouldnt warp or damage the wood.

I know what you mean, I'm after buying one to strip the old/loose paint off a metal staircase, but I think it'd be quite brutal on wood & damage the door.

I think the heatgun & scraper then power sand is the best option for me.

caustic soda is ten times easier just let it soak in.or nitromoars older stuff has like ten layers of paint on .wire brush will rip the wood.

buy caustic soda not dear, add boiling water and get a thick brush like a broom head make sure its soaked leave it a while and scrub.or dip it if you have a tank dip it.

nitromores-put a good amount on an area not to big and let it bubble.when it has bubbled up get a scraper(like a wall paper scraper but no wooden handle)and pull even down the door.youll feel the bite point as doing it.once got it almost perfect coat lightly all over door(with nitromores again) and use fine wire wool to take it off.when done rinse with a hose pipe and cold water.

lay the door flat dab not brush pleanty of nitromors on and cover with sheets of news paper then brush more nitromors over the paper to form a poltice.this will help to stop it drying out.leave for half an hour then use a paint scraper to remove the paint.do this twice and the paint shuold be gone.finish by rinnsing whith white spirit.using water may raise the grain.if the paint is in the grain try putting on rubber gloves and using fine wirewool dipped in nitromors.a tool called a shavehook is quite handy as is an old toothbrush.
