Complete Waste of Space - Advice!

There's this guy in my office who comes in and does nothing but surf the internet all day and does the minimum amount of work. The guy is a complete waste of space. In fact, the other day he rolled in at 10.30 am (even though our core hours are 10-4) claimed his alarm clock is broken (it's been broken for about four months now)! 2 hours later decides to go home sick as he is allergic to dust due to his moving house. I've already mentioned it casually to my boss however, i'm not keen to be seen as a grass even though it's not fair that I'm coming in and doing a full days work and he is loafing about. Any ideas what I should do ?
 
Why should you care about being a grass? If hes a slacker he doesnt deserve the job over someone who would actually do some work.
 
Alert his line manager and ask if you can stay anonymous. This sort of stuff should not be allowed. If his line manager is already aware of this but is not doing anything, go to the line managers superior.
 
Also, he comes in at 9 am takes an hour for lunch then generally leaves about 4.30. So he's not doing his daily hours either. Just needed to rant I guess. Annoys me it does!
 
Surely if he's only doing the bare minimum of work and often turns up late then the higher ups will notice it too. At the end of the day, if you've mentioned it to your boss thats all you can do. Is his lack of work affecting you in any way other than annoying you?

Doesn't affect me directly although he's at the same grade as me and producing less work.
 
Would seem pointless telling the line manager, they are already clearly incompetent for not noticing his lack of work. Go one above.

edit christ this forum is fast at times :o
 
Thought this was a thread about me for a minute. Pretty much sums up my working day apart from the being late and calling in sick bits :D

HAHA same here, if he said core hours were 9-5:30 then I might have been worried :p I work in winchester aswell so was :o when i first read it lol, and I strolled in at 10:30 other day aswell but my boss authorized that but there is only two of us in IT so dont know what anyone else would think :p
