Hanks, Cruise, Gibson...put any of these people in a film with no other heard-of names and you can still have a blockbuster.

Also these actors can do any type of film, from a scottish historical figure to crazy police officer, a kid who turns into an adult over night to a astronaut, a barman to an air force pilot....I could go on... a person alone on an island.

Some people say Di Caprio - but he's hardly been in films where he was the main star. Titanic - the boat was the star!! The Beach - you could argue.

Matt Damon - but is that only Bourne films. So it's one role, one film where he's done that.

Also talking about HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTERS not small time films. So Jude Law in Alfie doesn't count!!

EDIT:
Definition of "Greats"...people who can front and solely hold an entire blockbuster hollywood film. by being in it, by their name being on the poster, people will turn up to see it.

When you suggest someone state

Name:

Film: (Holywood Blockbuster that they have been the main star in.)

e.g.

Mel Gibson
Braveheart, Mad Max, Patriot,

Tom Hanks
Castaway, Forrest Gump, BIG, Sleepless in Seatle, Apollo 13.

Jack Black

(and yes rossyl, i did notice that this isnt a 'spec me.. thread ;] ) :D

I'd have to question your original choice of 'greats'.

Other then one performance, Cruise has done nothing to shed my opinion of him as a piece of wood. Hanks is one of the most uncharismatic and boring actors I've ever seen, and Gibson simply cannot act.

Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Amir Khan, Aishwari Rai could all do it :)

firstly - not wrong forum - it's general chit chat - not about the films themselves etc.

secondly re greats - yes i would agree...but you know what i mean...people who can front and solely hold an entire blockbuster hollywood film. by being in it, by their name being on the poster, people will turn up to see it.

Jack Black - typecast comedy?

Christian Bale - not been in huge hollywood films except Batman, and just like Bond, it is now the name of the film NOT the name of the actor that draws people in.

Christian Bale.

Beat me to it, outstanding actor.

And rossyl, your basically turning your question around with your comments about peoples suggestions, if your saying Bale hasn't been in huge hollywood films then in a sense your asking "Name me an actor whos been in huge hollywood films but is being overshadowed by Gibson, Hanks.. who doesnt get enough credit."

Whereas your original question makes it out as if your asking who do we think will eventually replace the current greats in the near future.

To which my answer would be: Christian Bale

they aint what they used to be

having sat and watched The Man Who Would Be King th other day, there are certainly no UK actors who could be putting in the sort of performances that Connery and Cain do in that movie

He'll need replacing soon but I totally rate Jim Carrey - he can do plastic styled roles e.g. The Mask, but things like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as well.

Matt Damon was very good in Good Will Hunting I felt, so he can probably play different roles quite well. Same with Ben Affleck, he was a different people in Good Will Hunting, Mallrats and he's been in chick flicks too I think.

I thought that Jude Law almost matched Cain in the film Sleuth. He's got very good charm about him, though his roles are all very very similar.

Edit - ok just read what the OP wrote at the bottom of his post lol.

What about Jude Law in Enemy at the Gates? Good actor, not the best though.

Brad Pitt should be amongst the greats imo. Forgetting the pretty boy image, he has a lot of talent.

Well DiCaprio and Damon have both been in many films other than the ones you mentioned where they are the stars: Catch me if you can, blood diamond, the aviator, the departed (both of them), good will hunting, the talented my ripley.

Christian Bale is better though. He's going to be in the new terminator flicks too.

Jim Carrey - very possibly, if he manages to get other roles. But who was he cast alongside in Eternal Sunshine?

Kate Winslet. I thought she sucked ass in the Titanic, though like Carey was excellent in Eternal Sunshine. You're probably right about getting other roles, I reckon he could fill out new ones. On that note so could Kate? There hasn't been much mention of women yet.
