Foreigners Living in the UK.

Yeah! I mean, all the ex-pats living in Spain speak Spanish! ;)
It's the same for a lot of British ex-pats no matter where you go, I met people in Germany that had lived there for 10 years and still couldn't speak the language.

we are talking Mainrand Chinese her m'boy.

Mandarin.

Those (and a decent enough number and 1st hand experience of both) that I've met from HK are far better. When I was in Beijing I was appalled. I am still in shock at these people.
One or two bad experiences and bad eggs sure no problem. 100% bad experience= coincidence? I do not know.
Shows our Polish brothers are superb in comparison.

Right, first of all, i'm not racist. At all. One of my good friends is Polish, another black - they're both great.

But for some reason, it really narks me off when people from other countries come to the UK to work/live etc, then never bother to learn the language.

Today, at work, I had to actually speak another language to a customer because they couldn't speak English. Now, whenever I go to a foreign country, I at least make an effort to speak the language, so why the hell can't people do that over here?

/rant over.

To be fair, a lot of English people don't know how to speak english properly either.

/runs.

Works both ways all cultures are probably guilty, Brits on holiday *shudders*. I at least make an effort to try and only speak the language of that country when on holiday. It's fun and people respect it, even if you don't pull it off so well. You tried :)

I don't think it's racist to say. I know a lot of people who weren't born in this country and complain about it more than I would. Most of my friends are foreign and enjoy speaking both english and their primary dialect. The government came up with this citizen test anyway to try and encourage integration, including language skills (I think).

I don't think religion comes into this at all. It's about language.

And I'm not racist :) I'm pro-immigration

And many English speakers when moving baroad make little or no attempt to learn the local lingo beyond swearing and "which way to the place where I can get smashed out of my skull?"

99%, you must be having a laugh?

I'm portuguese born in england, when i got over to visit my family there are loads of english that won't even make an effort....

I think it kinda works both ways, bet there is another foreign forum simular to this moaning about us brits not making an effort...

Just find a fit foreign girl and be happy. ;)

I agree, annoys me when people speak a different language in front of your face, offends me, who knows what there saying.

Not racist at all.

plain and simple, i dont like it.

No problem with foreigners moving over here to start a new life ect, but have the courtesy to speak our language.

Same here, that really ***** me off, its like when i pop into one of my local computer shops, and sometimes when i ask the guy if hes got something in, he'll turn around and speak to someone else (to get them to look upsatirs for it presumably), but he doesn't talk to them in English, so for all i know he could be saying 'see if we have got blah, blah, blah upstairs for this ****** with the small dick'.

You're very very wrong then. I lived abroad for 5 years and I'd say about 10% of British ex-pats I knew bothered with language courses.

What are you basing this opinion on?
