It's a passive card but it runs very VERY hot. Unbelievably hot. It chucks out more heat than my CPU!

If there a way I can underclock it or undervolt it as it almost seems like a fire hazard right now! I'm not gaming with it, 2d only.

Pencil mod reduces resistance tho (which increases voltage). I think if I did this the heatsink would start to melt! :eek: :p

I don't mind soldering a higher value resistor tho, which should reduce the voltage, but even then I'll probably have to flash a BIOS with lower clocks...

I think it may just be easier to pick up a 2nd hand fx5200 or something... :o

How much heat are we talking. As far as i know gpu's usually do run hotter than cpu's.
 
i've got a passive ATI Radeon 9000 64MB (AGP) that you could have if you need.
i don't remember it putting very much heat out at all.
 
Thanks for the offer but it needs to be an NV card for Linux.

This thing is scortching hot, put out tons of heat into my case...

I'll try out rivatuner, is there a Linux equievelt or can it be done thru a modded firmware?

Mike, take the easy route and source yourself a nice quiet fan and fashion it in such a way as to blow air at the GPU heatsink and maybe the chipset.

I know some hardware is designed to run hot but just a little airflow can halt thermal runaway in its tracks. I've seen temps drop as much as 30°C by just fitting a bog standard AKASA Amber 92mm.
 
Ok, I've got a loads of 80mm fans and some zip ties, I'll give it a whirl. Ideally I'd like this thing to produce less heat tho as it's just going to cook the rest of the system (I just have 1 intake fan) even with a fan mounted.

I have been testing the new Radeon HD3450 cards which feature a passive design and even using the latest fabrication process and automatically underclocking themselves when not under load they kick out quite a bit of heat!

I prefere passive designs myself as I enjoy the quiet but I have yet to see a passive GPU that runs cool, especially in a HTPC type setup where space and airflow is limited. A quiet fan pointing in the right direction works really well with these passive cards as they all got half-decent heatsinks.
