cue argument about cores/gaming not being multithreaded etc..

I say Q6600, almost the same clockspeed potential and spare cores too.. many will disagree :)

are you looking to buy or are you starting a debate we've had a hundred times already?

I'd say quad :)

The e8400 will reach higher clocks, but the 6600 isn't exactly going to bottleneck gaming, and things like x264 encoding will actually fly on the quad.

Looking at his sig it looks like hes already got a E8400 so not sure why this thread needed to be posted

I'm fairly sure he was involved in a discussion on this before so no, I think its just self congratulation on his choice or wanting to up the post count a bit tbh.

He's probably just upping his post count so he can gain access to the members market so he can sell his E8400 and pick up a 2nd hand Q6600 since he has now realised his mistake :p

He doesn't like green either remember.

Oh, and the answer to the OP is: "it depends".

I wasn't going to bring that up but yes, he shared his views on colour whilst discussing this very topic unless I'm much mistaken.

I'm suprised he's run out of stuff to say after less than 200 posts!

Anyway, I await an enlightened discussion that has nothing to do with my pc, it's colourscheme or anything to do with that sort of things tbh.

Maybe he's seen the error of his ways having a dual core ;) :p

I would rather have 4 cores, that run slightly slower rather than 2 that run slightly faster. Games like Alan Wake need a min of 2 cores, because each thread is so intensive (1 thread thread on a 3GHZ quad takes 1 core with 80 percent usage just on physics).

No doubt Far Cry 2, doom 4 and co will also love it, and RTS games likes Supreme Commander adore multi core, I noticed a massive difference in quite a few tasks from a 3GHZ E4300 to my 3GHZ Q6600...(which I know could go higher, but having a few issues clocking it with the motherboard I have currently).

Dont we just love this debate! ;) The day it becomes really relevant is the day that both processors will be out of date. Having run both dual and quad, I knew which way to go for MY situation. Currently flying IL2 Forgotten Battles http://www.warbirdsofprey.org/

He is more likely to get more money on fleabay than anywhere else. I just managed £63 for my E6600 on there. What are people getting for E6600's on the members market?

I've been trying to do that for years, to no avail. I'll never shift my old x2 4400+ :(

45nm for the win... but you gotta give us more info then that you know. Go pat yourself on the back elsewhere.

Get shot of it on the bay. I got £69.95 for my x2 4200+ socket 939 so yours out to be worth a bit more than that!

Best thing I ever did and then put £40 to it to buy a low VID Q6600.:D

Quick question? How long ago was that, as I have a bundle with same processor and 2GB RAM and motherboard for sale?

I'd like to think I made a good choice going for the E8400.

Neither CPU is a bad choice, they're both stonking performers. :)

why does this same issue keep coming up?

Because people with little experience on the opposite processor to what they have got make statements such as this!

Quads for multitasking / video encoding / everything else except games

Duals for games.

I would take a quad

So internet browsing, reading emails in Outlook 20027, word processing, burning CDs etc etc, is so much faster on a quad? :):D;). Quickly looks around for stop watch!

In many cases it seems that there is a pre-conceived idea that to have 4 cores is better than 2 purely because there are twice as many. Perhaps it is now down to the ner.. ner...I have a quad and you have only got a duo, or the attitude of mine is bigger than yours that keeps appearing in today's society. There, I have said it now! That should keep the debate going shouldn't it? Ducks down behind table laughing!

7th May it sold. I looked at selling as a bundle too but decided I would get more selling seperately on the basis that more people would want to buy the cpu as a cheap upgrade for their socket 939 system if they had a single core processor, people would want the 2 x 1Gb ram to upgrade them from 1gb to 2gb or even 2gb to 4gb for Vista users and my mobo was a DFI lanparty expert which people just want anyway! :D

Got £69.95 for the cpu. Best of it was I bought it about 6 months ago from ocuk on special for £46 :)
£65 for the corsair c2pt memory (poor really as two previous lots sold for £80+) and sold the expert on members market here for £47

So £196.95 in total for my socket 939 bundle so not bad. For that money I could I bought a cheap Intel system (mobo+dual+2Gb) but I went the whole hog and got as per my sig for about £250 2nd hand off here and the bay. £50 well spent :D
