Low improvement in 3dmark score

I am a newbie in overclocking and had bought an e8400 recently. I overclocked it from 3 to 4 ghz. However, I noticed that the scores of my 3D mark score goes from 11800 to 12500. I am at wits end as my friend told me that when he overclocked the same cpu, the increase was dramatic. My other specs are:

Abit IP35 pro
XFX 8800GTX Extreme 768MB extreme edition
Corsair 2048MB TwinX XMS2 (2 x 1024MB)
Corsair HX620

The temperature is at 49 degrees and the voltage is far from nearing its upper limit. I 've also tweaked the memory to be 5-4-4-12.

I'm not sure what did I do wrong. Is the increase normal? Can someone please advice?

wut ive done so far is overclocked the cpu to 4ghz and also oc the graphics card to 625/1390/990 from 600/1350/950 and the scores jumped a little to 13000. Hmm.. it seems fine to me but the perplexing thing is that overclocking of 1ghz of the cpu only causes marginal/little improvement in the 3d mark score. Is there a bottleneck anywhere or is the scores are to be expected?

What drivers are you running, that score seems awfully low ?
Oh vista or XP ?

I'm getting 11965 3DMarks with an 8800GTS (stock) and a 2.8 ghz c2d.

The score does seem a bit low.

Have you done the usual:

1. Set NVCP to performance?
2. Close any uneccessary processes?
3. Run 3DM06 on basic setting?

i m using vista ultimate sp1 pack at the moment. i ve heard that vista can cause some reduction in the 3d mark 06 but not the actual gaming performance itself. i dont really care about the whole score actually but i do take improvements in 3d mark 06 as a guide to how good i ve overclocked the system. Any suggestions or advice?

Something not right with your score before overclocking. I was getting that score with a 3.15Ghz 4200+ x2 and a 8800 G92 GTS (heavily overclocked).

When I upgraded to a q6600 running at 3.4 my 3dmark score went up to 16000. AT 3.8Ghz, it went up another 1000 points.

So I would expect your overclocked gpu with a faster (and faster clock by clock) processor to be getting something similar but at least 15000 tbh

It would help if you list your detailed results:

eg

sm2 score
sm3 score
cpu score

and the fps in each of the sections.

This might help us pinpoint where your problem is.

all the drivers are fully updated. i ve just flashed my bios also.

Fully updated to what though? Have you let Vista install the drivers for your GTX or have you downloaded them yourself? What version of gfx drivers are you running?

Have you installed the vista mobo drivers which came with your board or downloaded the latest ones from Abit's site or just let Vista make the best guess?

Is that Vista32 by any chance?
Mine's turned to goo recently, wasn't sure if it just didn't like the new mobo, or if it was SP1, or some other update that did it. Basically, with certain the CPU at 3.7 (maybe it was 3.6) and my GTXoc2 at 655/1450/1060ish, I'm getting 200K+ in aquamark, 15K+ in 3dmark06 and 7K+ on vantage. That's in Vista 64 and (other than vantage) XP32. Vista32 is 135K in aquamark and 11500ish in 3dmark06, 5K something in vantage.
Can't quite fathom it. I'm 95% sure they all have contemporary driver versions.

This is my latest scores with cpu clocking at 3.8ghz

3DMark Score 13051
SM 2.0 Score 5609
SM 3.0 Score 5785
CPU Score 3541

Graphics Tests
1 - Return to Proxycon 47.72 FPS
2 - Firefly Forest 45.77 FPS
CPU Tests
CPU1 - Red Valley 1.12 FPS
CPU2 - Red Valley 1.79 FPS
HDR Tests
1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 54.15 FPS
2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 61.55 FPS

It is interesting to note that the increase in my 3d mark score is almost entirely due to cpu score after oc from 3 to 3.8 ghz. There was very little improvement in SM 2.0 Score and SM 3.0 Score. What could this mean?

Yep something seriously wrong.

Look here:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17811738&highlight=3dmark06

Check the dual core table and your will find 3.4Ghz E6600 with Gtx cards beating you and your should be thrashing them.

Here's mine:

3DMark Score 16598 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 7051
SM 3.0 Score 6638
CPU Score 5675
Test Results
Graphics Tests
1 - Return to Proxycon 58.94 FPS
2 - Firefly Forest 58.58 FPS
CPU Tests
CPU1 - Red Valley 1.89 FPS
CPU2 - Red Valley 2.73 FPS
HDR Tests
1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 66.21 FPS
2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 66.54 FPS

That was at 3.8Ghz

And I used to get 2500cpu points with a 3Ghz Amd 4200+ x2

You sure you have switched off the speedstep and other power saving stuff in bios?

You haven't got AA or AF enabled in the Nvidia control panel have you? otherwise something is definitely wrong.

that score is extremely low, for example my system @stock scores 1200 or so, clock the cpu to 3.0ghz and vid card @796/1095/2039 i get 15213. make sure you run 3dm06 at default res of 1280x1024, set all in the control panel to performance and make sure your graphics card is running at its proper speed eg x16, use gpuz to check this. can be found here

hmm i m thinking that its my graphics card that is the problem. I compared with others on the same system and the sm 2.0 and 3.0 is like a 1000 less on both with similiar cpu scores. The thing is I just updated the latest software from nvidia. I'm currently reformating my com again and hopefully it'll work. Keeping my fingers crossed its not the hardware problem.
