Which 640gb ?

Our stock will definitely be the single platter version by now.

I've also got one of the technical bods at WD to come and have a look at this and the other thread to see if they can sort out the high access time compared to the Samsung.

So am I right in saying this (WD3200AAKS) would be a GOOD substitute as the SAMSUNG F1 320 is not available yet?

While on the subject, Is the (WD2500AAKS) also a single platter like the above? I'm assuming it is due to the same description...

Cheers

The WD 320gb has slower access times and transfer speed than the 640gb version as oem's wanted the drive quieter and cooler so buy a 640gb samsung/wd if you can afford if not wait it out like a lot of us for the samsung 320gb's.

slackworth, who is releasing the 334gb drive, samsung or WD? hope you can post in here next week as i'll definately be interested, should bump the transfer speed from 95mb/sec to close to 100mb/sec probably, hope WD create a noisy 334gb version not for OEM's so that we can get some serious speed on the cheap.

I did wonder why they released 320gb's when the 1tb drives use 334gb, guess it was for marketing purposes so that you can directly compare with other 320gb's.

is that what you meant when you said "They have some new desktop drives coming with 334GB platters in the not too distance future though I can't say much till next week."

as they have been using 334gb platters in their 1TB for the past few weeks according to anandtech. Was hoping you were saying there was gunna be a 334gb drive or 667gb drive:(

john, there are 320gb drives already out that use a 320gb platter. wd has 1 and samsung's is coming soon ISH.

Ended up getting the WD as it was on TWO

Here's mine:

Only thing is the access times.... The HDD is totally silent, is it a possibility that the "go slower but be quiet" mode is on?

Whats up with the access times, I could've sworn that the WD 640's originally had better times? That was one of the reasons I was going to get one, but the new crop seem worse, am I correct on that?

It may look like the Sammies now! :)

This is what I thought! Does anyone know if these might come with the "quiet" mode on?

Yes, I know. What I`m asking is if there will be a single platter 320GB drive that uses the new 334GB density platter. Can`t put it simpler than that.

My WD640 purchased from OC on 28 March 2008

and Dougiebabe2003 you can check with this.

Cheers.

Going to check in a minute. Would you happen to know what i'm looking for?

EDIT:

No matter. Burnt it to disc and found the setting AAM. It was on but on 254 which was the fastest seek or the loudest setting... which ever way it works. Anywho, disabled it and ran the test again and here's the results:

Very happy bunny now :D

CPU usage is mucked up. Ran it again and really low so ignore

Nope. 320GB platters only. You have to remember that 320GB is now considered a low end drive now so vendors are not pushing the top end performance technology into them so people buy 1TB etc.
