these new gen cards

Basically theres the GT260 and 280. They are the only 2 next gen cards out atm.

Nvidia i think will continue to make the 9 series for the cheaper end not sure though.

edit:Oh yer totally forgot about ATI oppss.

so your saying the 4850 will be about £100 and be better, that sounds good, but will it be backwards compatible with pci-e 1?

Well it's supposed to be a $229 part, so at first it'll be a bit more expensive, but not by too much. Its TDP is 110W (I think?), and it has a PCI-E connector, so it has enough power to run on PCI-E 1 sockets (75+75 = 150W, more than enough).

Because nobody can release details of the cards yet I dont want to hold my breath... But I am! If the ati cards are near what the rumers say, its going to be a great value card (when the prices settle!)

I think ATI may also be fortunate to release this type of card at a low point in the economic cycle for both the UK and the US, where generally both are looking to spend less on luxury items. I can see the 4850 ultimately being a very popular OEM card, and populating many Dell and equivalent systems.

There will always be a market for the über high end cards, either for ultra high end gaming or just points scording, but a real winner now would appear to be a well-priced high mid-range card, and ATI appear to be well placed to deliver.

Despite all the rumours that the Nvidia cards may be pants, CUDA could be one saving grace for those that do a little bit more than just game.

yeah if they dont work in say pci ex 1.0a that would rule out a lot of midrange buyers for the 4850 :( heres to hoping cause that will be my card or have to take a 8800gt if it dont.

they are just refreshes of the refreshes... (R600 -> RV670 -> RV770, for example)

improved implementations of the architectures... nothing truly next gen like the 8800GTX was when it came out...

Im looking forward to Intels GPU. Hopefully it will give Nvidia and ATI a well deserved kick up the arse!
