*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

Ladies, skimmed through a few posts.. too much to find what I want to know..

How much will it be? announced $200... ~ £100?

Will that price be just for the handset? can we 'unlock' it to use any PAYG sim card?

cheers

That info's on the O2 site or just about every major news site. Or page 2 of this thread.

As is this. But no, the handset certainly doesn't cost £100. You'll only get that price if you take out the contract. PAYG pricing to be announced (expect a high price), unlocking unknown but very probable.

I wonder if Apple will use a different memory set this time round, like for the N95 where it uses write once memory and it needs a code that is unique to the IMEI number to unlock it. So you'll have to pay the network £20 for the code, and there is no way round it.

The iPhone unlock was never a proper unlock anyway. One piece of software did rewrite the lock part of the EEPROM, and it did survive future updates... but it wasn't quite right and buggered up some phones after a while.

The iPhone unlock used in ZiPhone and others just bypasses it by patching the firmware to bypass it rather than actually unlocking. It's a bit old, but the bottom of this site explains it:

Meh, charge has to be reasonable and if it's on PAYG they are going to have to unlock it for you, winnar :)

On the whole MMS debate, I definitely find the lack of that an issue as I do send quite a few - especially as Im on Flext it only costs double a text and allows you type pretty much what you could in two texts as well as attached whatever media...

One very useful aspect of MMS is that when you are abroad they still cost the same (20p) while texts go upto 40p  (thats T-Mobile though - unsure what the other providers do). Lets just not talk about internet access while on international roaming :/.

So if you were away on holiday with an iphone and no PC access - expect keeping in touch via SMS/email to be significantly expensive...

Theres a definite role for MMS and I doubt email can surplant that without adding things like personal push email at a reasonable cost...

ps3ud0

Some places I have read seem to think that v2 will not be that hard to unlock. Essentially, just the current one with the version 2 software, the beta of which has been cracked.

It'll be doable, and if PAYG is priced to get no revenue from O2 for Apple, Apple shouldn't really care too much at all.

The software will be cracked and deal with activation and jailbreaking. The new 3G baseband firmware will need patching to unlock it though, and that will be different. Made my the same company though, and enough people want it unlocked to mean that someone's going to do it sooner or later.

I hope we will be able to Jailbreak the new iPhones. I think I should be picking one up next week, kind of glad I did not jump on the iPhone band wagon when everyone I know bought them I prefer the black back compared to the silver.

Pick one up next week? They aren't out till July 11th!

I'm not sure you will be forced to sign up fully in store.

I think you will have to provide details about who you are and where you live.
Then if within 30 days you have not activated your contract/model you will be fined by o2.

No way.

How are they going to enforce the fine? Court Order? It'll cost them millions in legal fees to chase up people if they don't sign up. It is a much easier and more elegant solution to get people to sign up instore like all other phones. The system is already in place, why not use it ?

Think about it.

Exactly, plus the subsidised phone, they wont give you a cheaper one on the assumption that you will pay the rest later or sign up the contract.

makes perfect sense to me. Its the only logical way. Unless they do what they've done, meaning that neither o2 or apple will honour any warranties?

@Spitfir3 where bouts in the wizza are ya?!

Who cares about warranties when you can get it for free under the "I'll sign up to £75 contract when i get home boss, I promise !.".

Take it home, unlock it, put it on ebay.

Go back, get another, repeat.

Do that for every store in the country, and then repeat, retire a millionaire and bankrupt Apple and O2 in the process.

I think the fact the phone is only going to be for sale in o2 and CPW, and not online or in Apple stores pretty much shows it's going to be the same deal as buying any other mobile phone from the highstreet.. contract and credit check up front or no phone.

How have you not been on the apprentice?! Or are you?! :)

It wasnt a dig!

I just think that o2 and apple will be all too aware of the jailbreak scene! And will do their best to nip it in the bud!

Time will tell I suppose!

I personally, as a kosher o2 contract owner like the way that the iTunes signup worked. But that's just me!
