Hi there,

Basically, I'm looking for my first car. I just need a shed to last 6-12months. As long as I can insure it and its £500 tops (rather closer to £300 to be honest). But im really struggling, seems to be tonnes availble everywhere but Reading and surrounding areas. I don't know where else to look, any ideas?

so far:

Gumtree
Ebay
AutoTrader
Pistonheads.

any ideas would be lovely :(

Only thing I've managed to find so far, is an auto '93 toyota corolla 1.3 gsi. However its 3k on the old insurance. looking for something thats 2k (maybe a tad more if its nice) or less.

Auction if you have a mechanically savvy mate. Beware "sold as seen" unless you have someone with you who can give it a good once over.

I think even with Sold as Seen you still have 48 hours to return the car if it explodes.

Local free ads paper, or a cheap trade in, go round some dealers, you'd be surprised what thye have lying around.

my advise is shop by the car that you want not by area. It's not hard to get on a train is it? I will travel throughout the UK for the right car. Most sellers will pick you up from the train station if you buy their car. Even better- arrange to view a few different cars and go on a road trip with a mate in their car.

Local paper is the place for the real budget motors, especially ones that let you advertise for free.

Don't bother travelling too far, just buy the best looking car with a decent length tax and ticket and expect to bin it if anything too major goes wrong that you can't fix yourself.

Nope. Sold as seen means once the money has changed hands, that is quite frankly that.

Not quite, I have a mate who bought a Mondeo TDCI from a dealer "Sold as Seen" 300k miles, ex Taxi.

Subsequently he's had a new flywheel, clutch and wheel bearings replaced FOC after a quick call to his local trading standards!

Buy from a dealer, you have come back no matter what they say, it appears. :)

That's because there's no such thing as 'sold as seen' from a dealer. Some of them might use it in ads etc. to try and duck their responsibilities but really it can only apply to private sales. So, sold as seen means no comebacks.

Thanks for the tips guys,

I've actually found something however. :) Fingers crossed I will be seeing it and maybe even buying it tomorrow!

Few years ago I picked up a 205GTI for £225. Drove it 200 miles back home without a hick up. 4 new decent tyres and a head unit I sold for £50. Even had the full Madsex exhaust system which had a work of stainless art as the manifold.

Was the first 1.9 I had and went like stink compared to my 1.6s

cool :)

Just about to ring the guy to confirm his address and shiz. should be picking up this baby tomorrow:

Price makes me a bit hmm, but to be honest, its got MOT and once that runs out I will probably just sell it unless it can get through with no major work.

The guy assures me its all in good working order. Got a golf/car expert going along with me anyway just to make sure it's sound anyway :)

I've just been looking for anything I can buy and insure and run for 6months for under 3k (yes that vast majority of that is insurance!) and this seems to fit the bill. But as it goes not only that but I really love the look of the old golfs. and to me this looks the sex :)

*edit*

Just rang him, talked about it all and he said (obviously i will get this all checked) essentially the only problem is the front disk brakes and knackered (well one is, so it pulls slightly). So anyone know the rough cost of replacing the pair?
