I'm not voting on the poll as I'm not quite sure where my view comes on the scale, ethically I'd say people should be allowed to do whatever they want to their own bodies provided they aren't directly harming other people with their actions.

On a personal level I'm not hugely in favour of bionics/robotics where it isn't to replace functionality that existed before (e.g. after a car crash to improve quality of life), I think quite a bit of scarification and body modding implants look ugly but it very much depends on the person - some people make it look good and others don't. Self amputation makes me feel a bit uneasy but that has a lot to do with the unsafe conditions that some attempt it in - the problem is that to be safer it would have to be done by a qualified doctor which brings in ethical considerations.

what?! the transformers option was the joke option?

... well im gutted now. Thanks for ruining my day for me :(

anything that isn't natural, not even really that fond of plain normal earrings, half the time it just looks down right silly and the other half of the time i pity them :p, the discs in the ears, that tattoos that you'll want rid off 20 years down the line, the scarification that whilst your closest friends will tell you is cool actually looks like a load of crap to most everyone else.

i can't understand why you'd want to mutilate yourself in anyway ^^

This. :(

I'd love an extra pair of arms for example.....it'd make it somewhat hard to get a good coat though I guess.

But yeah, anything and everything, its all good in my eyes. Do what you want with your body, its yours to play with.

Anything that isn't natural? Well if you don't consider piercing and such natural, then surely makeup isn't natural, shaving isn't natural, getting your haircut isn't natural.

you have a very funny concept of mutilation :p

edit: ah yes, i can just see whats so unnatural about cutting your hair, it's just as disgusting as scarification

Do what thou willst.

I enjoy my piercings, ink, scars and implants. They don't have any negative impact on anyone.

Well it's either natural or it isn't. If piecing and tattooing..etc wasn't created by nature then cutting our hair, shaving, putting on makeup..etc wasn't either.

And I don't see why something apparently being natural suddenly means it's acceptable.

i never said i found it unacceptable ;) i said i can't understand why people do it, i implied i wouldn't do it, and said i think it's senseless mutilation, doesn't mean it's 'unacceptable' ;)

This debate has been done before but there is a difference between tattooing, scarification and implants/piercings (to an extent) compared with cutting hair, applying make-up etc. All are unnatural in that they change the visible appearance of the body but you can wash off make-up, grow your hair - you can't magically remove tattoos with no traces*, you can't unscar yourself completely, piercing and implants can leave traces behind. One is a permanant body modification one is temporary so if you want to compare fairly then something like a transfer/airbrushed 'tattoo' compared to cutting hair is the fairer comparison.

*I know about laser removal but as I understand it the results are still not perfect.

people should have freedom to do as they want, however i think that some things are just naff..

particularly tramp stamps on the lower backs of many women.

urgh

The thing i would draw the line at is self amputation, it just weirds me out.

Things like that are just morons attention seeking. Trying to desperately to make themselves different to everyone else.

why not just settle by being different by the things you say and do, making yourself look like some work related accident victim doesnt look cool.

I like tattoos because of the art and skill involved in some, and some look good, and maybe say something about the person. But mutilating your body, cutting off flesh or removing fingertips etc, thats just plain stupid

You've met many self-amputees then?

Are you saying that there is neither skill required nor artistic flair involved in scarification?
