With the rising costs of motoring, im now looking at cars that are cheap to run.

I dont use my car much anymore (dont even use it to commute to work, i cycle) so its just for shopping and the occasional trip to see friends and family.

so after a little hunting ive found this little jem.

The Toyota Aygo

vital specs:

Top Speed 98mph
Acceleration 0-62mph 14.2 (the only down side )
BHP 67
Max Torque 68.6

Combined MPG (km/litre) 61.4 (21.73) ( 61mpg from a petrol engine)

so what do you guys think shall i get one or look at something else?

Yes - buy something with a big engine. No wait, really.

People are exiting proper cars left right and centre becuase they 'OMG MUST GET MORE MPG'. This is retarded, especially when like yourself you hardly use the car much. If you hardly use the car, petrol will NOT be a major expensive irrespective of what you drive.

Take advantage of the fact the values of used larger cars are crashing, and buy something nice, safe in the knowledge that who cares how much fuel it uses, you dont use it very often.

Buying an economical car becuase you dont need a car very much is daft.

I probably fill my car up with petrol once a month. The cost simply doesn't bother me. If I ran an Aygo instead I'd HALVE my petrol costs. Or on other words I'd save 35 quid. Big wow.

Pointless imho.

Why spend all that money on a new car just because its cheap to run?

How about spending less on something older?

So what would you suggest?

Dont forget to factor in that depreciation on the Aygo is low, i would get very cheap insurance ~£200 and the fact the tax is free.

What do you drive at the moment? How far are you driving when you "visit friends and family"? Shopping + Aygo = fail, on account of the boot having less space than a lunchbox, visiting relatives who live further than about 5 miles away = fail, on account of the Aygo being a completely unsuitable car for out-of-town driving.

The aygo is great if you hang around in town all the time, it's horrible if you have to drive it anywhere else.

Wouldn't recommend one as an only car, makes a great town runabout when you have a second car for other journeys.

I would say though, that in the situation you've outlined, you don't need (or indeed want) an aygo, or anything else that's primarily focused on reducing costs. Get something interesting for the rare times you do drive.

I currently drive a rover 600ti lovely car but VERY expensive to run. about 90% of all the driving i do is city driving so dont get to open it up any more.

Your car is worth a grand at the most.

An Aygo is £6000.

You won't save anywhere near £5k by buying an Aygo.

Your 620Ti shouldnt cost much to run if you rarely use it.

ok lets try the maths approach

Aygo
cost of car £200 pm
petrol £15 pm
insurance £200 pa

cost per year £2780

600ti
tax £180 pa
petrol £50 pm
insurance £500 pa

cost per year £1280

so it costs £1500 more per year to own the aygo

but lets look at it over 3 years (the length of time ill be paying off the car)

cost of running the aygo over that of the rover £4500
estimated value of the aygo after 3 years £4500 - £5000
estimated value of the rover after 3 years £0 - £50

so if you factor in the value of the car over a 3 year period (excluding maintenance costs which will be higher on the rover) they would cost me the same. But after 3 years the cost of the aygo drops by £2400 to £380 while the rover stays the same.

hmmm interesting... i suppose the only way to know if its worth doing is to go and take a aygo for a test drive and see if i like it.

edits lots of edits

Except unless you've run the room into the ground over 3 years it'll be worth more than £0-£50, more like £500-£1000 because good condition bangers don't depreciate much, if at all.

You've also not taken any servicing or maintainance costs into account.

Why would a 620Ti only be worth £50 in 3 years time?

£50 for its value in scrap, its only worth about £800 now and given the way the value of cars like this are plummeting i dont expect it to be worth much if anything after 3 years (assuming you can find someone who wants it). I suppose if you find a enthusiast with money to burn you might get a few £££ for it.

You really don't seem to know much about used cars do you

Provided it still has an MOT and works why would it only be worth scrap value?

Im just being realistic. Assuming petrol prices keep rising as they are then low mpg cars like mine will become incredibly unpopular.

If no one wants to buy it then all its worth is scrap. Even if i could sell the car for a reasonable amount say £500 it wouldnt make much of a difference to my calculations.

I havnt made up my mind about the aygo yet im just looking at my possibilities.
