Bit of a "down the memory lane" thread this.

Anyone miss them at all ? my first 2 3d cards was 3dfx chipsets...

I wonder how the GPU industry would have changed if they was still alive and kicking.

:(

3dfx were great, I had Voodoo 1, Voodoo 2 12 meg, then Voodoo 2 sli with the link cable between them (30fps in quake 2 1024 res!!!), voodoo 3 3000. Voodoo 1 and voodoo 2 really raised the bar for pc gaming, games just look so much better :D.

Not to mention GTA 1 with Glide.

Nobody had anything that could compete at the time.

I still have 2 x Voodoo2 12Mb each for 24Mb combined onboard Ram in SLI in one of my old Win98 gaming machines (never bothered selling as worthless so kept incase I ever wanted to play a Win98 only game).

SLI did work properly and circa 1996 things like Quake1 in OpenGL & Tomb Raider1 in Glide were at the time amazing and were the early titles which helped push PC gaming foward with 3D gfx cards.

I think some NV cards since 3DFX were sold have native legacy Glide support as I have found several Glide only games used to run with a newer NV card up until W2K (never tried on XP).

The Orchid Righteous Voodoo1 card paired with my Matrix Mystique card, man, that's a memory I love... and bought it 1 weeks before official release, man, first and only time I porbably had the best PC in the country rofl... with a Cyrix 200+ processor in it... and a wopping 16mb of ram I think it was at the time and a "huge" 1.7gb HD rofl... man... how times change...

If it wasn't for 3dfx, we'd be 3-4 years behind where we are now I reckon!

Cheers Pug

The thing that stood out for me was how good Glide was compared to DirectX when a game was optimsed to use Glide.

I found this V5 6000 'review' a while back: http://www.x86-secret.com/articles/divers/v5-6000/v56kgb-1.htm

They even managed to get DoomIII running on it but that also shows how far we are today compared to 8 years ago as it only scores 5-10fps at 640*480 minimum details

I miss them for sure.

I owned a Voodoo 3 2000 PCI and i also owned the Voodoo 5 5500 (2 GPU) loved that 5500 was a fun if sometimes frustrating card to own.

Remember my first voodoo 2 , was astounded by the visual upgrade compared to sofware mode in the likes of quake 2 romb raider 2 and forsaken.

I even bought another a few months later, probably one of the best upgrades I ever purchased.

Are you sure about that? I was under the impression that that wasn't the case - normally you end up having to use a glide wrapper.
