Any Canon 17-55mm F2.8 IS owners here - is it really that dusty?

I'm on the verge of buying myself a post-viva present, and was looking at the 17-55mm F2.8 IS, to replace my 17-40L. The main reason for the upgrade is to have a zoom that I can use in low light (atm I'm limited to using my 30mm F1.4 which is great, but not always wide enough).

However I am a bit concerned about all the talk about dust getting into the lens. It can't be that bigger issue, otherwise people wouldn't be buying them I guess!

Mine got one HUGE speck in it, but luckily it dropped to the bottom and then got sucked out again... which was nice.

Just keep it in its bag and it will be fine.

Kick ass lens :)

To help keep dust out (you can't eliminate it) keep a UV/skylight on the front end in case dust creeps in through there but the majority of it gets vacuum sucked in as the barrel goes in and out while zooming especially dust that settles on the barrel over night so best keeping it in a non dusty area when not in use.

Mine was dust that built up after 1.5yrs of usage which is fair I suppose!

Sounds ok then. I always keep my camera and lenses zipped up in my camera bag when not in use.

It does sound like the lens is worth this minor inconvenience though!
