A day from the diary of a BMW driver...

Agree, anyone not overtaking at a reasonable pace is annoying, why do people overtake a car doing 80 at 80.000001 mph?

Actually I am sometimes guilty of this - if I am travelling with the cruise set to 75mph and somebody else is doing 72mph then I'm afraid I will move out and pass them and I won't accelerate round them.

What ****** me off is that bmw drivers are usually aggressive, have lack of courtesy and an inability to observe traffic on busy dual carriage ways.

how much experience is that based on? I could say the same about Mondeo and Octavia drivers around these parts.

Why does it **** you off? Are you quick to make a point because its BMW drivers? You haven't noticed Porsche drivers Merc drivers or Audi drivers doing the same?

The problem isn't BMW drivers, it the way they are treated. People will drive in such a way to wind them up, whether its jealousy or because they really are that sad they follow what the "popular people" do. When the BMW driver then puts their foot down to get away from the idiot, that idiot usually posts something along the lines of "BMW driving like an idiot, blah blah blah". Im afraid I don't conform to your stereotype, because I realise that driving like a pillock won't get me just a slap on the wrist or a hand gesture, it might cost mine and other peoples life.

Mainly Hertfordshire and Essex.

Can't say the same in my areas..

Read my post.

I have found Porsche drivers don't flash, give hand gestures, honk or accelerate then slam on the brakes into the back of you. They sit behind you at a reasonable distance and wait for you to move aside.

Whilst I have found some Audi and Merc drivers are like bmw drivers but proportionally this percentage is much lower. Not to mention the fact they do not do accelerate into the back of you or give hand gestures. They simply give you a flash of the headlights while creping up on you.

(edit: range rover sport drivers are also one of the worst out there)

BIG LOL :p

If you look out of your bedroom window Gareth you might see some men in white coats, don't worry though, it will all be better in the morning.

As someone who went from a BMW to a Porsche I can honestly say I never remember the transformation you speak of and actually when I went from the Porsche to the Audi I never felt anything either, how strange. As I said before sweeping statements are the weapon of choice of the hard of understanding, something I feel you prove with amazing consistency if this thread is anything to go by.

I can only base this from my experience..

There's millions of factors...

I'm not applying this to you.

I've just found BMW drivers are most likely to act the way I have described.

Percentage wise over total BMW ownership it's still probably very low.

But With car models such as X5's and say for instance the Range rover Sport, this stereotype is much more likely to be true.

There's even t***s that drive corsas, boxters's and bongo friendee's!!!

I don't drive agressively. In fact, I have to say, I would rather spend my time in the inside lane behind a tanker, the pull out when its safe.

The only experience I've had of bad BMW driving was an old guy who drove like he was drunk, weaving in between lanes. On the other hand, I have found mondeo drivers speeding up when I am in the inside lane and then slowing to keep pace with me to prevent me pulling out into the middle/outer lanes. This isn't a rare occurance either.

Well for a start the probability has already dropped by at least 50% as you don't own a post 2000 3 series or x5 ;)

You’re a funny guy Gareth, the more you post the further you get from the post of yours I took issue with. A person flashes their lights at you who happens to be driving an X5 for a reason we only have your side of the story on and you make a sweeping statement to support your foolish generalisation, which you then spend the rest of the time refuting.

I suggest your experience is limited and your observation is predisposed based on your “BMW drivers usually” misconception. Every brand has its idiots and the more types of said brand on the road the more likely that they will have a greater ratio of eejits. As someone who has been driving for the best part of 24 years I can say with some confidence that BMW is not better and no worse than many other brands of car on the road……….well unless you focus on them of course.

If this thread was about Rover, Volvo, Ford or any other brand of car my point would be made in the same way.

The point he is making is that certain types of cars ATTRACT certain types of people, not that certain cars make you into a certain type of person.

It's surely not beyond the realms of common sense that there is a certain type of underiseable whose dream car is a black X5 with black windows.

Of course not, but the same 'type' of people as you call them might also be attracted to an Orange Corsa as the definition of 'type' is subjective I would suggest. Aspirational 'types' as has been used are defined by the level of their aspirations.....unless you choose tabloid definitions of society. I am very aspirational, but my aspiration is to retire when I am 50 NOT to be seen in a particular car.

No one would argue that a BMW is seen as a premium brand which badge snobs with a superficial outlook on life would see as being more important than their ability as a car, but the same point can be made for those who wont choose a BMW BECAUSE of that image rather than seeing it as a good car.

...and the SPECIFIC point I took issue with was one of generalisation. The world is shades of gray more often than not...

When you live in Sussex, your parents live in Essex and your friends live in Hertfordshire you end up doing a fair amount of driving.

Yes, when you only have just about 2 years of proper experience on the road it's nothing compared to 24 years, but I think it's enough to encounter enough bmw motorway drivers :p there's a probability that a fair few meet the generalisations.. ;)

Lets just agree to disagree :)

There's a reason BMW drivers attract this stereotype. Personally I find myself having to deal with BMW drivers' abnormal driving behaviours and constant flouting of the highway rules almost every time I go on the M1. It's almost surreal.

Crikey, I only posted this for a bit of a laugh, didnt think it would get so much attention!

BMW bashing threads always do. Unfortunately there are some sad losers who rather than form an opinion from experience, look towards the people who they see as "cool and popular" and follow what they think.

You will notice that many have stopped posting because its past their bed time and mummy has restricted their internet access.

I find this whole car stereotyping thing hilarious.

I went from an alfa gtv, to the alfa drivers biggest nemesis, an BMW driver .... and even worse, an M3 driver at that.

True people treat you differently, true you act differently (cos you can), and true its also fair to say that generalising is silly (ha ha), but at the end of the day i dont get how people get so het up about things.

I now drive a fiesta and sit in the inside lane... because i drive a crappy car and thats where we should be. Quite why some people think they have the right to stay in the outside lane but NOT have to give way to faster cars i dont know - Jealousy..... thats what i think.

People turn to cavemen on the roads because thats what the roads are ..... but in nature you dont see rats getting annoyed because cats and dogs dont have to stay in the sewers do you? .... Silly analogy but its true eh.

As i said, i now drive a fiesta - But i've been on both sides of the coin so i can see both sides.
