I am no alcoholic but i love the taste of beer. After a hard days work I love to have a nice cold beer, however turns into 3 or 4 cans every now and then. I dot drink to get drunk but just love the taste.

I am only 22 but dont want to end up with problems later on in life. Can people reccomend and 'nice' non alcoholic beers? I hate shandy, too sweet for me. Or any good tips to get rid of the urge for a nice cold beer?

I love drinking orange squash, but doesnt taste as good as a cold beer!

Thanks!

  1. Have you ever felt you needed to cut down on your drinking?
  2. Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
  3. Have you ever felt Guilty about drinking?
  4. Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning (Eye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?
Answer yes to two of those and it is a sign of Alcoholism and should be investigated by a Doctor.

Only the first one.

OP - I was in exactly the same situation as you and it led to massive weight gain over time. Learn that you can do other things in the evening but drink, and try to have at least three nights a week off drinking.

i can answer yes to 3 of those but ive drank twice in the last month and a half. am i an alcoholic ?

An alcoholic is not necessarily someone who drinks everyday, that is a common misconception, hence why medical advice should be sought.

nothing wrong with enjoying a few beers, can't recommend any non-alcoholic ones though I'm afraid as I've never tried any. Like Lysander said though, keep an eye on those calories ;)

Sorry, but that's just rubbish. Example:

John likes an occasional drink, Jane is tee-total.

"Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?"

John picks up a beer after a hard week's work. Jane gives John a self-righteous lecture on the moral implications of drinking.

"Have you ever felt Guilty about drinking?"

Jane, through her lecture, makes John feel guilty about drinking when it clearly irritates her. He sees nothing wrong with it - after all he hasn't been drunk since his early twenties - but feels bad for upsetting her.

... so John is an alcoholic even if he only has a couple of beers a week?!

The problem is that two of those four points are based on the perceptions and opinions of others. I don't need to tell you that these can vary widely.

I believe alcoholics anonymous depict an alcoholic as someone who cannot (or struggles to) go a month without a drink.

I think the point being made is that you can answer yes to those questions if your starting position is of someone who drinks very little as opposed to someone who drinks a lot.

1. Have you ever felt you needed to cut down on your drinking?
Yes from a couple of drinks on the weekend to none at all (motivation here could be money, calories/health etc).

2. Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
Yes - it gets irritating when people constantly pester you to drink when you've made it quite clear that you're not going to.

3. Have you ever felt Guilty about drinking?
Yes - when giving in to peer pressure, I should be mentally stronger

4. Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning (Eye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?
No.

I've just answered Yes to 3 questions from the point of view of an infrequent drinker/non-drinker.

Becks do an alcohol free beer, it tastes different but isn't too bad.

Tesco have a low alchohol cider (0.5%) that's quite nice - still tastes like cider rather than juice imo, not a bad option for hot summer evenings.

Then your onto other juices - things like grape, elderflower, cranberry have a bitter taste which may be more to your liking (although most lagers are quite sweet imo).

Simplest advice though would be to have a cup of tea when you get in instead of a beer, it's not hard and when you comfortable and refreshed your less likely to go from a hot cup of tea to that cold beer.

You can't break alcoholism down into 4 such basic questions imo...the first one especially doesn't even take into consideration whether you have actually succeeded in cutting down, or giving up drinking! The second and third questions are more to do with how easily you get annoyed or how often you feel guilty about things, than they are to do with alcoholism, imo.

Hypothetically:

1. Have you ever felt you needed to cut down on your drinking?

yes I used to have 1 or 2 drinks at a weekend, then I decided I wanted to take my fitness on to a more serious level, so I decided to cut out drink altogether.

2. Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?

Yes, people should mind their own business. I'm a short-tempered person, how does that make me an alcoholic?

3. Have you ever felt Guilty about drinking?

I went out for a meal with friends, we all had one drink with our meal, but one person couldn't because they were the designated driver. I felt a bit guilty that I was drinking and they weren't.

4. Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning (Eye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?

'Hangover? Don't you have to stop drinking to get one of those?'...'erm I mean no doctor, never' :D

I can answer 'Yes' to all of those questions based on Saturday alone.

I'm doomed.

But then maybe the fact I was Best Man at my mates wedding that day had something to do with that, and I nearly got too frazzled to do my speech properly (I was bricking it)!
