Nvidia GTX 280 - IN STOCK NOW!!!

Do you have a monitor that can show that RES ?.

Do you not know COD4 is a dodle to run as based on COD2 engine and can run at 60+FPS at all times at 1920's on a GTX/Ultra ?.

Actually my monitors native res is 1280x1024.
I was merely pointing out that it performs under the 9800GX2, and gains a maximum of 20fps compared to other cards.

I DO understand that most people are not going to be at a huge resolution like that, but I think we can all agree its a silly, overpriced piece of rubbish... no?

lol@ at price. and all hail ati if there prices come in on target there sales gonna fly. never liked nvidia due to various reasons and these prices just add more fuel to my fire of hatred.

O.k Ive had my 8800GTX since the day after release day, I'm now in the market for a new GPU.

Why?

I wanted to hold off for the GTX280 and have £400 to spend. Is there any reason I shouldnt go for the cheaper 9800GX2 instead,
there is a reason, it's called sli.

I've looked at the benchmarks while the GTX280 is always faster, sometimes it isnt by much, I have the money but should I bother spending it all?
no, you shouldn't bother spending at all

This will be going in with a [email protected], 4GB PC8500, Asus Rampage X48 MB. I'm an NV fanboy btw so no ATI's (soz).
Why did you buy a crossfire mobo when you're never planning on buying an ati card? A p35 would have done

It is a waste of money for me, but then my card can beat a GX2 in most games as SLI is also a waste of time and money overall.

But facts are facts and the GX2 only beats is when other aspects over Memory Bandwidth are needed, the G92 in Single card use has less Rops than even a G80, and the GX2 is 2 bolted together.

Why do people insist Crysis is badly coded. Its an incredibly detailed game looking better than anything by a distance, and as such it runs at a slower fps than other games that don't look as good, thats no different to every other game. People, some specifically, got caught up in the whole "optimised for quad core" crap the guys behind it said in the hype to release. Every single game maker hypes up ANY feature the game can use no matter if it needs it or not. IT will infact use all cores, most games can be load-spread across all cores now, this is all you need to claim that its optimised for quad cores by running a few different threads. Anything you buy has people overhype everything it can do. Games like Crysis don't, and wouldn't use 100% cpu load on all 4 cores, why would it need to, it doesn't make it badly optimised, it would be badly optimised if it did use 100% of all 4 cores.

Saying all that, its not the best game ever, but frankly who cares either way. How many people play a game and play it over and over and over until the next hardest on hardware game comes around. We've mostly all played it, and won't play it again so soon so its irrelevant.

Its a more powerful card no doubt, but very very few people will see any of that new power. If you get 80fps in a game with a 9800gtx, and this gets 125fps, or 300fps, your game experience is unlikely to change in the slightest. However despite all that, do expect in the next year, maybe 18 months, that PC gaming will make fairly large strides forward. Consoles get released, become the focal point and PC's get a lot of ports with little extra in the way of options so not much power needed. But after 18months, to 2 years, game dev's start to shift back towards PC's as the graphical hardware shifts significantly in the PC favour. But why waste £500 now, when you can buy the same card if you want, in 6 months for half the price(maybe less depending on sales and 55nm shift) when the games that need it start to appear.

If anyone had any balls, they would COMPLETELY boycot the high end Nvidia cards, only buy ATi £150-250 cards and watch as game dev's hopefully ditch their TWIMTBP program, which would almost certainly see a significant drop in Nvidia's lead in performance, which would hopefully cause them to move to a new architechture and compete with ATi on price and tech, over paying off dev's.

I just can't stand Nvidia's business practice anymore, pay off dev's to optimise for them, price fixing, overcharging, lots of bullpap PR stunts, this latest crap of "cpu isn't important, Intel are scared, we're taking over" i mean, wtf. Half of their business practice seems to me, to reek of anti-competition law breaking attempts to keep ATi down.

Very good post !

With all this commotion over the GTX series pricing ATI will be making a killing if they keep the prices down at the price point they previously suggested. To me it seems NVidia shot themselfs in the foot this time round by trying to get too complex with there GPU and more specifically creating such a massive gpu that yields are rediculously low forcing the price even higher.

Kinda reminds me of the 2900XT launch which we all know failed quiet badly. Several review sites have allready noted there digust for the price/performance of these cards and in some cases stated how if they hadnt of had ATi 4850's in already and tested them under xfire setups they might of actually been impressed by the GTX280 but as it stands the are far from impressed at the moment.

Nvidia's new cards are released and we still have some thinking that nvidia have some totally killer tech hidden up their sleeve they are not releasing. This is it this is the big gun that nvidia has been holding ready to shoot ati down with they are not holding onto anything. Most people that have the sort of money to buy these cards won't because they know the price is going to drop soon by how much is anyone's guess but it will drop so why pay more then you have too.

This is a golden oppurtunity for ati if they take it keep the price of their cards down have nice doesn't have to be ground shaking performance and they win. I have read some benchmarks and i always thought these cards were going to be 30-40% ahead of the GX2 so maybe worth a high price performance seems off from early reports so maybe more work needs doing on the driver side.

There is another area of problems for nvidia how many people have faith in nvidia making drivers except when they have new products out which once they have our cash for these cards could be awhile.

I do not think nVidia is overcharging, this is the fastest single GPU card ever on a significantly improved architecture. Top end was always expensive, it is the same with CPUs, motherboards, or other non-computer related goods.

This card will enable nVidia to create a number of lower performing cheaper cards which will let everyone enjoy better gaming experience in the future. The price will come down after a while anyway.

As for ATI, I do not think they will be competitive. Other than a short time with 9700/9800, ATI has always been behind nVidia, and now that they are are part of AMD they are even more resource constrained than before. They have not been able to produce a competitive GPU for the last few years, there are always big expectations before ATI releases a new card followed by a disappointment. Why would it be different this time ?

Just wanted to add that comparisons with GX2 or other SLI-based solutions are misplaced due to numerous SLI limitations and problems discussed many times on this board.

it's not even directx 10.1?????

Yep, that very true, and pretty disgusting for the price they are charging for it, it's not even the top tech tier. :-/ Actually, bar brute force, the ATi cards are more advanced, technologically. IMHO :)

Top post!

Lies! :p i still have my 2900XT from slightly after launch, and I love it. At 720p :o :p :D ATM it's actually very quiet, even in a hot room with direct sunlight on the case itself. ;) Actually, my whole machine is basically inaudiable; colour me impressed.

I love my PC and OCUK , and have no qualms about throwing cash at the both of them.
But I'm not paying those prices for a graphics card.

I don't why there is all this whining about the pricing as all the top end cards pricing will alway command a a high price at launch and OCUK to have overheads to take into account to. Not to worry though the prices will come down soon enough.

With the growing economic problems around the world and debt and all that stuff, £500 is a lot more money then it used to be.

Unfortunately, due to inflation and huge increases in prices of energy and food, £500 is less than it used to be. In fact, in real terms, the prices of technology goods have been coming down for a long time.

ridiculous pricing that i could never justify just to play crysis a little bit smoother

at the moment pc gaming probably has more competition than ever from the consoles doing so well so you would have thought theyd have put a bit more thought into the prices ?
