gtx 280 reviews thread

So, looks like 280 GTX > 9800 GX2 > 260 GTX > 3870 X2 > 8800 Ultra > 9800 GTX.

I presume when the ATi cards come out the prices will come down? Once the 260 GTX comes down to nearer £250 it will be a good deal. Especially if they can squeeze some extra out with driver updates.

GTX and Ultra both beat a 9800GTX at 1920's with AA+AF, the G80 has more Rop's than a G92 and the 2 cards have more Memory and bigger Memory Interface.

people keep using crysis as the benchmark for a cards power; has anyone considered that crysis might be poorly written and no foreseeable card is going to run it well.

A bit of both i suspect. Look at the COD4 benches and they arnt anything to write home about either.

Not a bad firingsquad overclock either. 754/1559/2640

I'll be keeping my 8800GTX and will probably slap another one in to tide me over another year :P

Unless ATi can sway me with there offerings :D

Have to say I was looking forward to splashing out on one of these too :(

Yeah its odd that it went down, they say not a mistake

We see big gains from the 4GHz rig when compared to the stock 3GHz testbed at the lower resolution. At 2560 x 1600 the system seems to take a bit of a hit with a low 60 FPS average

i'm just asking this from an idiot perspective here (mine)

has anyone stopped to consider that this card has JUST been released and still won't have as good of a driver support as the older cards.

I remember when the 8800 first came out a friend of mine bought one, it ran about as well as my 7900 did at the time, now it just destroys it.

I'm keeping my eye's open on this card, not just for now, but waiting until ithas some updated drivers behind it. (that and by the time the new half decent drivers are out, the price will probably drop also :P)

Oh yeah drivers have a lot to do with this, might even explain the weird results above. Doesn't really stop the ATI brigade though ;) Frankly I won't be buying any of these anyway so not really fussed either way.

If people cant stomach £400. I think the gtx 260 is a good upgrade from the 8800GTX. Firingsquad sum it up well.
Then there’s the GeForce GTX 260. Its closest equivalent is a pair of GeForce 8800 GTs running in SLI. Here it’s a neck-and-neck race, with the 8800 GT SLI combo winning some benchmarks, and the GTX 260 taking home the performance crown in others. Considering its slimmer $400 price tag, this card is the easier upgrade to stomach given its performance. In fact, it’s the board we’d buy if we were plunking down the cash for a graphics upgrade today. This board ran circles around the 9800 GTX in our testing, and only costs about $100 more. Look at it from another perspective, the GTX 260 gets you 80-85% of the performance of the flagship GTX 280 for $250 less. NVIDIA’s got to stick to that $400 MSRP though in order for this equation to work.

just been looking at some of those benchmarks.. I thought my 8800GT was a good card. now it looks old hat.

I think the order of the day is wait and see what happens when the price comes down on these and better drivers are released.

i game at 1680x1050, i cant see any reason to upgrade my 8800GT, if i dont have fraps running i dont notice FPS drops and cant feel any games struggling atall, hopefully ill be able to hold out till the next round of GPU's with only a CPU upgrade to cope with the likes of Alan Wake!

Nvidia should be doubling the GT280 transistor count like RIGHT NOW because the performance they're offering us is pathetic and they merely want to drain all they can out of the market before they repeat the process again. Vote with your pockets poeple! Demand more power from your GPU!

you're unappreciative of what has been done here... If you read the article, and i assume you did...

no joking, GT200 is powerful, and to fit so many transistors on one die is fantastic - they even said it has more transistors than nehalem... and you want them to double it again. they practically doubled if from the original G80 core.

do you know what kind of heat and power requirements that would create???

you can't just flick a switch and BOOM, double things like that. the problem with the card is low yields leading to insane prices, and the fact that a 9800GX2 can do pretty much the same thing for less...

The simple fact is though, people dont pay £400-500 for a technological marvel if it is even that. they want more FPS and a lot more. Surely that the whole point.

I feel Nvidia may have forgotten this, to be honest i couldnt care less how many transistors they shove on a board.

All i care about it when i spend my hard earned cash i wanna see more FPS when i load up a game.

wowfood,

I hear where you're coming from, But ....................

Do you really think they have just shoved this card revision out of the door with minimal driver support ??

Heck i doubt it, Like milking as much from a card series, They do the same with drivers,

EG:New Card + 1st New Driver for it, Not too bad not too great

Same Card + 5th New Driver for it, Better than previous 4 releases, People think we are getting somewhere

Same Card + 99th New Driver for it, Damn This Company will get my money Next time too, This Card Rocks now and the driver support is ace

Why would they give the ultimate driver out if they had it on release ?? Because then you would have guys whinging about no driver updates etc etc and maybe these said guys would turn towards other manufacturers ?

It's marketing and selling that's all and it's designed to keep you enthralled at what this company does for its consumers

Lol

Ciao

driiiiiiiiiiiivers... same issue with the gtx's when 1st released... give them a few months and they'll start to shine a bit more (and possibly make it worth it, as the prices should have dropped a little then...)

Still looks as though ATI may have the upper hand for a little while though.

/me sit's back and waits

Beaten too it dude =)

But yeah, not many people are taking the whole 'new driver issue' we ALWAYS have with nvidia cards on release.

Best bet is to sit back, wait a couple of months, wait for the price to drop and see which card performs better on more mature drivers.

I have only ever bought 1 card on launch, and that was the G92 gts.. and that wasn't exactly brand new tech...
