The Oldbar extension restores the appearance (but not behaviour) of the Fx2 dropdown, or you can tweak browser.urlbar.maxRichResults.

Rebooted and now it's all good, FB working and so is uTorrent's webUI...all updated on 2nd PC too.

Downloaded, installed and all seems good to me. Noticably quicker than the previous version too, which is nice.

While reading Slashdot I stumbled upon this:

Here is how to get more or less the old behavior [from the URL bar]. Go to about:config and set browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped to true and browser.urlbar.richResults to false. Then restart.

Does that work for you folks who don't like the "awesome bar?"

The Smart Location/Awesome Bar learns based on what you type and what you select from the dropdown, so it's something that gets better with time.

matchOnlyTyped will still search in the middle of URLs, so if you type something like "thread" it'll show a thread on here.
There's a load of bugs to be able to set modifiers to search bookmarks, history etc. Screenshots (and links to bugs) here.

Bookmarks, history, settings, saved passwords should all go fine and extensions too, provided they're compatible.

Yes, in theory. If any of your extensions haven't been updated to work with Fx3 then it'll be disabled. Your bookmarks should transfer invisibly, thought it certainly wouldn't hurt to back 'em up just in case.
