Modern driving game that's not atrocious?

im loving the grid demo and definatly getting it as a full game. i guess im not into heavy driving simulators. but then again, the following might float your boat: gtr, rfactor, lfs. im not playing with a wheel like the g25 (yet) only a simple set of pedals, wheel, flappy panel gears (grrr) i love going cruising on tdu,or playing grid demo or even dirt, they may not be ultra realistic but what game is? bass hunter?

There aren't many good driving games on the PC, so get a console.

WHAT????? GTR and GT Legends are the only racing games you'll ever need. Race 07 is decent as well. What is there on consoles? FM2 is ok, and... GT5 lol.

Sure, if you like anally realistic and dull simulators with lacklustre graphics.

Dude if you think GTR and GT legends are dull then you have no soul. Gt Legends in particular gets absolutely spot on what makes a driving sim great, handling, tracks, effects, immersion, all perfect.

I agree with the op btw grid is awful, no advancement from point car at corner, hold down left/right type games from the 80's.

Each to their own isn't it. I like sim style games, like GT or Forza. They have more content and quality graphics than any PC game can dream about. The PC sim driving games are very niche and not popular with most gamers.

I've played GT1 through 4, got to level 50 at FM2 with all trophies etc. and can say without hesitation that GTR and GT Legends are 50 times the sim that those console titles are. The handling in GTR etc. is better and more responsive, the cars handle more like their real counterparts, there is more variety in handling as per the vehicle you are suing and the GTR series just feels more like driving. No comparison imo. FM and Gt always suffered from a chronic lack of variety, all the cars feel pretty much the same. BTW I think the graphics in GTR and GT legends are very effective, realistic looking and detailed. FM 2 for instance looks cartoony.

GTR and GT Legends look crap compared to Forza 1, never mind Forza 2 ;)

I'm not saying PC driving sims have worse handling; I'm saying the games are lacking in content and desirability for the majority of us. They are anal and boring. If I want a truly accurate driving experience I'll go out for a drive in my motor.

Dude what a poor opinion, there's nothing anal about GTR etc, all simbin racing titles let you pile on the realism as little or as much as you want. both titles i mentioned are just high quality, if you think those titles lack content i'm not sure what you see in fm2 etc tbh. BTW I own all the games you mentioned and can see nothing crap about the graphics, GTR's look is better imo. GTR + GTL are way more fun than fm.

Okay 'dude' ;)

Nascar Racing 2003, if you don't mind the occasionally dodgy trackside objects, and a reasonably steep learning curve if you're unfamiliar with the sport (although the 10 part driving lessons guide is very helpful). Its quite inexpensive though. If you haven't got a steering wheel and pedals, that might be a good investment too.

Graphics only come into play when its an arcade game... sim games have always been about gameplay over graphics (hence the still fairly large GPL community!). I think its the same with the strategy game community too.

I personally don't like rFactor much (much prefer LFS) but if it's content and desirability this game surely has the most content available for any racing game!

I'm pretty much a sim-only guy but having a bit of fun on GRID (but as with all arcade games, I get bored of them soon enough and go back to my sims), I think it's pretty good!

I dont see why sim games are 'anal' though... Just because you cant go full throttle round every hairpin. I find sim games much more enjoyable because theyre far more rewardable and you have to learn everything and once conquered provide some of the best experiences (online this is, AI driving games suck). Of course my opinion is in the minority overall as otherwise there would be a much bigger demand for these types of games.

As people have said above me GTR evolution is out soon, (basically GTR3 but as an addon for Race 07) so if you liked GTR and GTR2 I would certainly try it out.

Isn't Grand Prix 4 meant to be amazing now with all the fan made stuff? very realistic brings it up to current 2008 season?

If you can find a copy, they are very rare I hear.
