The Mass Effect (PC) Discussion Thread

Same here mate.

At one stage ALL of my weapons had it apart from my pistol.

I got stuck on one part (breading grounds) only to find that I had some uber rifle in my inventory that ripped through the Kroegen :D

How do you equip upgrades? Or does the armour have to support upgrades/add-ons?

Been playing it for a while and i love it. Best game i have played since crysis.

Great gameplay, nice voice acting and convos, and interesting story. It also runs smoothly with everything maxed and looks great, infact in some places it is quite breathtaking too look at.

Only niggle is an annoying "general protection fault" that closes the game occasionally. I have only had it twice in 6 hours and didnt happen once today and i played for at least 3 hours. Hardly game destroying but i hope they fix it in the patch.

What I did to level up faster playing the 360 version is kill everything on foot. You get twice has much exp if kill things on foot. So I always killed everything on foot on planet surfaces as well has indoors.

I love this game. And the credits song by Faunts is awesome too.

In its own right, it is one hell of a game, very immersive, highly enjoyable. But when you start comparing it to KotOR it loses a bit of its luster. It's kind of like what Twilight Princess is to Ocarina of Time: doesn't quite seem complete. After the sidequests in the citadel the rest of them are just a slew of much of the same and it does seem a bit repetitive.

I loved the story. However, the nature of the antagonist (lone agent and the absence of a total war) means you don't get the same sense of impending doom as I maybe would have liked. I didn't feel the same sense of urgency I usually get in RPGs because the geth only occupy a few places here and there...it was only on Virimire and after where I felt that. It's not necessarily a bad thing I guess. I was also disappointed by the lack of other cities in the game other than the citadel, it made the Traverse feel a little empty I thought.

Lastly, I thought there wasn't enough dialogue (such as random sequences) between characters. Even just a 4 line convo here and there would have made things a little more lively. Whilst you do learn a lot about the characters etc. they didn't seem as connected as they did in KotOR.

In the end I have no major gripes with the game at all. I loved the gameplay itself (infiltrator) and Bioware have done an excellent job. I know it's not always productive to compare it to KotOR but it seems like the most obvious thing to do, but it's pretty difficult not to.

Roll on ME2 :)

EDIT: also I hear they're planning to use your ME save info in ME2 so they can carry on the story as you played it, should be good.

That was one of the quirks I had with it compared to KotoR. Occasionally in KotoR when you're running around exploring/questing on whatever planet some conversations between either you and/or your party members broke out. On ME, it's only on the Normandy that you get to properly talk to them, and only in elevators that your allies say 2-4 lines between each other, nowhere else.

I installed it yesterday after work, only played for a few hours (Got to the citadel.) But I'm having trouble with sounds during some cut-scenes. Its like the sound effects dont work, but the voices do.

I'm using a x-fi music card. My drivers are upto date as far as I know. Anyone else got this problem?

Yep get exact same problem..... guess which sound card i have :D

Creative Xi-fi

its not too bad as its uncommon and it appears mostly in dialogues. Not sure what the fix is.

Also what selection of NPCS are people adventuring with? i picked the turian and Rex so far. But if im after entertaining dialogue between members who'se do you recommend?

Wrex has some great dialogue imo, the other would be Ashley with her masochistic personality. I personally love her comments when you walk into Chora's Den :)

It doesn't really matter, most interactions are either done on the normandy or are part of the story. I tend to choose Garrus and Ashley though.

i quite like Rex his voice sounds oddly familiar....cant remember from where.. (i am sure heard it from another game)

Also whatshername Troi ? the empath from ST:NG does the voice for one of the badguys :D nice! (badgirly i should say :D)

agree

Ashley: "A million light years from where humanity first began... and we walk into a bar full of men drooling over half-naked women shaking their asses on a stage. Can't decide if that's funny or sad."

Kaiden: "What, you don't think they're here because of the food?"

I'm gutted, I finished it and that's it. I thought I could carry on

I know I thought I could carry on roaming the galaxy completing side missions.

or just have a crew member with high decryption and electronics, i use garrus for that.
Heh. I thought that, but never figured out how to use them...

You have no idea how much I hope you're right...!

I personally think that this ranks as the best game I've ever played. And I love KotOR.

Sorry if I'm the millionth person to ask this, but:

  • What are the noticeable differences between this version and the 360 version?
  • I heard AA can not be enabled, so are jaggies quite annoying or are they edgeblurred?
  • How does the game perform? Would it run on mostly high settings on an 8800GTX and Q6600?
