2008 French Grand Prix - Race 8/17

Bit over the top? The post was pretty negative, it was a valid question.

You're probably right. But I've lost my sense of humour over the way certain people seemed determined to stick their fingers in their ears saying LA LA LA I'M NOT LISTENING F1 IS PERFECT AS IT IS.

I'm not missing the concept that F1 has been near ruined the last few years but rather than constantly complain, I just get on with it and always assume "the next year will be better"...

Thing is, for the last few years it's been obvious that it WOULDN'T improve for the next year. This year....even I'm cautiously optimistic :)

I'm hoping the rule changes do shake things up a lot, really would like to see Super Aguri replaced though, 20 car grids = :(.
I also hope they can sort out the safety car 'punish the innocent drivers' rule. It's what takes a sometimes-boring sport and turns it into the diabolical, clown-like farce we see today.
The proposed changes didn't sound too ludicrous, who knows though?

Sounds like Alonso's lap was a soft tyre, low fuel run to grab some headlines.

Poor Piquet, his days are numbered.

Why 'poor Piquet'? F1 owes no-one a living, and if Renault can find someone who is a) faster and b) doesn't have a penchant for investigating barriers, gravel traps and other cars then they should drop him.

I must say - I thought he'd do better than he has done. Maybe driving talent skips a generation, and his kids will be as good as their grandfather was :)

I'm not sure, I think he's been on a slippery slope, he NEEDS a good result so pushes a bit too hard and screws up.
I had also expected him to be much better than what we've seen. It's not a time for Renault to have some gimp ruining their chances of points though. Alonso isnt much help in the way that he seems to want to risk everything going for max results rather than bank the team anything.
As an Alonso fan I'm all for that sort of attitude, as a Renault fan... Meh.

Like Heikki, he's had some poor luck with the car as well.

Australia - clutch failed.
Bahrain - gearbox failed.
Canada - brakes failed.

But he's also thrown it into the scenery, and not been desperately quick when doing so.

Presumably so, given that they wouldn't let Hamilton and Rosberg change fuel levels if they qualified in the top 10 before being moved down the order.

So someone could post the 11th fastest time in Q2, and if Rosberg and Hamilton both beat it then he'll start 9th with whatever fuel load he likes. Nice one FIA, y'all really thought that rule through huh?

The fuel is decided on where you qualify not where you start. What if there are penalties applied after qualification for blocking cars etc, are they meant to completely redo fueling for several cars?
The rule is well thought out and quite clear, the fueling etc goes from your qualifying position and not your starting position.

But why is there a rule regarding fuel levels you start on? What was wrong with being able to choose how much fuel you started with? Is F1 honestly improved by having a qualifying system that rivals brain surgery in its complexity?

And hell, if you want to control fuel loads - ban re-fuelling! Why do they need to re-fuel in a race anyway? Formula One could definitely placate the beared, vegetarian, Guardian reading environmentalist brigade if they set a fuel limit that made teams sacrifice power for fuel economy - and they'll need to eventually, so they might as well start making concessions now.

Ban fuel stops, ban rear wings, give them slicks and bring back forced induction. ;)

*n

Slicks we get next year. Forced induction might be on the way in the next few years.

But I do wish they'd hurry up and ban re-fuelling - it adds nothing except problems.

Ban ban ban... and other times people ask for the complete opposite... unban engine development, unban ground effects, unban active suspension:) People don't know what they want!

Did you honestly just equate banning re-fuelling with the ban on engine development?

I'm genuinely curious - what has re-fuelling actually added to F1 aside from a few fires and making the results even more dependent on pit strategy? 'cause I really can't think of much good stuff that came along with it. I suppose without it we wouldn't have had those amusing races where Schumacher and Brawn managed to out-smart everyone with unconventional strategies (Hungary '98 and France '04 spring to mind), but that's all.

I would limit the amount of pit crew by half to make the whole pit stop longer and more work. A bit like A1 GP does.
