Figured I'd start one of these. I got my card today and so far am very pleased.

However the fanspeed is stuck at 14% and powerplay doesn't seem configured correctly so i'm getting about 60ish idle, 75-85 under load. I assume ATI or someone will come out with a bios fix for this...

Anyway so far I compiled about 1 hour's worth of stats from Fraps in CoD4 on both my 3850 and 4850 using identical settings

1680x1050, CCC set to max quality, manually selected 2x AA, AF set to app preference and AF slider in CoD4 all the way up

I've got the settings at 8xAA 16xAF now and will start recording statistics for another hour total.

I can't quite get my head round some figures I've just generated using the Crysis GPU Benchmark Application. If they are correct, then this HD4850 is amazing...

I'd just run 3dmark06 at default and achieved 14512 marks, barely any more than my overclocked 8800GT managed. Never mind I thought, try the games and see how they go.

Basically, my old 8800GT (512MB) at 1440 x 900 with a quad at 3ghz, running for 4 loops with everything set to high achieved the following scores;

Min fps - 8.94
Max fps - 28.4
Avg fps - 24.15

Another benchmark I kept when I had SLI'd 8800GT's at the same resolution/settings and with the same CPU got the following;

Min fps - 12.22
Max fps - 48.27
Avg fps - 29.5

My HD4850 overclocked to 700_2100 again at 1440 x 900 and with everything on high settings manages the following scores;

Min fps - 31.14
Max fps - 58.37
Avg fps - 47.74

I've checked the files I saved to notepad to make sure I wasn't running AA with the previous benchmarks, and they confirm I wasn't.

If this is true, and I have no reason to believe it isn't, then it's an amazing little card for the cash. I accept that SLI never really had a chance to stretch its legs at this resolution, so I'm not knocking it for that, but even so the HD4850 seems to manage getting on for double the average frame rate of a single 8800GT, albeit the HD4850 is overclocked and the single 8800GT wasn't.

If the 4870 improves on that, then ATI are surely back?

Are there any utilities to overclock the 4850 other than ATI overdrive, as I'm limited to 700mhz on the core?

Looks very promising, can't wait for mine to arrive with the rest of my upgrades. Mainly to play Age Of Conan, because grinding out levels when you have to with bad FPS is just so bad i gave up.

From leafing through a couple of those reviews, it seems that Crysis is a game the HD4850 does quite well in.

The single card results I've posted were all with the same CPU and motherboard, although the SLI results were necessarily from a Gigabyte N650SLI mobo, so I was limited to 8x on each GPU slot, although still with the same quad CPU at 3Ghz.

Interesting though.

I'm going to give some other games a go now.

SLI has always been a bit iffy with Crysis. Tooks can you do some 1680x1050 benches wth Crysis. I'm wondering how close it comes to my OC GTS.

Ok, with the card still at 700_2100, no AA and no AF at 1680 x 1050, high settings, I got the following;

Min fps - 23.19
Max fps - 59.24
Avg fps - 48.34

Unfortunately, I never recorded any 8800GT results at that res as I didn't have the monitor I have now.

Ok I could only find my results @ 1280x1024 everything HIGH

Tom|Nbk | intel e8400 @ 4050mhz | nvidia 8800gts 512mb @ 785/2200/1850 | Windows XP 32bit

55.075 AVG

Can you run it at that res?

Sure can!

Everything high, HD4850 @ 700_2100, Q6600 at 3Ghz, 1280x1024, Windows XP 32bit;

Min fps - 34.66
Max fps - 59.97
Avg fps - 50.61

No it's not.

I went from a 3.6 C2D to 4GHZ C2D and picked up 1FPS at that res. I doubt it makes all that much difference tbh.

Just tried at 1440 x 900 with 4xAA this time. Everything high, HD4850 @ 700_2100, Q6600 at 3Ghz, Windows XP 32bit;

Min fps - 19.08
Max fps - 43.89
Avg fps - 37.58

Do you have any results with AA Tom?

still have about another 15 min of cod4 playtime to total 1 hour under 8x AA and 16xAF.

So far it looks like going from 2xAA and in game AF (dunno what it is), to 8xAA 16xAF has netted only a 6.5% performance drop.
