Do you pay towards petrol ?

No, I don't cart my mates around anymore, sometimes they take the **** with constant asking for chaffeuring and such (I am the only one who can drive), I just don't bother anymore. I'm not a bloody taxi driver. This is why I bought a two-seater very recently (after selling off a petro-guzzling Terios), specifically to drive the point back at them. Easy on the money too.

No swearing

With petrol prices soaring i would expect everyone to split the cost equally,i couldnt afford to foot the whole bill myself for such a long trip.

i usually drive and as long as people offer and keep rubbish with them and don't eat or drink in there i normally refuse there money.

But then its a simple matter of respect, people don't follow those simple rules they don't get offered a lift money or not

I brim the car at a local station just before we leave, then when we return I brim it again, and the cost to fill it back up, and any other fuel put in along the way, is split between us. If it's for short journeys I'm not too fussed about it.

Regular trips of more than a few miles; the passengers should pay all petrol as the owner/driver has already provided the taxed and insured vehicle together with driving skills.

When I was younger then we shared the cost but now, if Im going there anyway then I dont bother asking for any money at al.

every morning myself and 3 other workmates have to travel to the bosses yard. one guy does all the driving (18 mile round trip) so the rest of us contribute towards fuel costs.

I don't really give lifts (apart from family) but when I go somewhere in another persons car I always pay, seems only right to me.

In earlier days yes, these days not really as people tend to have their own cars, we do however go out to clubs around the country, therefore im usually the one stuck driving to the travel lodge.

If we're all going somewhere in the one car, we tend to split it pretty even. When we fill it up we split it, then if it needs more fuel to get back we split it again. That's for big trips... if one of my mates drives us to the pub they just get bought a couple of drinks, or someone else will drive next time, or blah blah

I'm pretty much the same. If it was a long distance though, I'd expect to at least be offered some money towards fuel, that doesn't mean I'd necessarily take it. If someone doesn't offer, or just expects me to take them somewhere, they're not getting any favours again.

EDIT: When I used to go out more, I would always at least offer to take my friends home too (not always the most direct way for me to get home), but I got sick of it because they never even offered to buy me a coke.

Depends for me. If a mate is giving me a lift out of a favour I'l owe him for it.

However my housemate can get stuffed if he thinks I am giving him a penny for taking me to tesco if he was going there anyway. This latter part has brought up a few arguements in my house at uni, 4 of us think it is unreasonable for the other to charge us for taking us somewhere he was going anyway.

Depends how long the journey is, i will offer some cash but mostly i only give out if asked. If its somewhere local then i usually just buy food for them or something.

300 miles would probably cost me about 70 quid in my car. Although ive never really worked it out..

if there was 4 of us doing that trip I imagine we would all split the petrol cost. Its pretty fair.

I'd pay the lot myself, but thats because when my friends drive they wouldn't entertain taking money from me no matter how hard I pushed it.

That.

However if they were insistent on paying after I told them there was no need I would accept, some people genuinely feel better for paying if they feel they owe you.

I usually choose to drive wherever I'm going, just so that I have the ability to choose to leave when I want.

If it's a longer trip than to town or something then I see how much petrol I've used at the end, and split the cost between however many people are in the car, and no one usually minds doing this as I'm doing them a favour by saving them from driving. I always include myself in costs too, as I don't drive to something I don't want to.
