First "real" HD4870 benchies @ HKEPC

What side are you on 2day m8, ATI or Nvidia ?.

P.S, I know you swap on a daily routine ;)

Sides has nothing to do with it, AMD said themselves that they are leaving the high-end to Nvidia now, and that their 4000's would compete with the 9 series, and the G92 8 series cards, so how could it possibly kill the high-end GTX 280 when they are totally different markets. :)

One thing I'd like to ask about the 4870's memory clock speed - apparently its physical clock is 900MHz, but its 'effective' clock speed is 3600MHz. Doesn't that make it QDR as opposed to DDR or have I got the wrong end of the stick?
 
Does the Radeon 4870 have the same amount of Stream Processors as the 4850? 800 isn't it?

Nope it's the same core just with a upped clock and a lot faster memory. I'm sure a lot of 4850's don't have any issue going to 4870 clock. Stuffed on the memory front though.
 
i thought the 4870 was supposed to have more steam processors and also clocked higher?

I never heard of that. I only heard of it being higher clocked and using GDDR5.

I'm not saying that it hasn't been said. Just that I've never came across it yet.

I believe it's still DDR, it just sends twice the amount of data at a given speed.

GDDR5 will deliver twice the data at an equivalent "core clock rate" as GDDR3.

Expect the marketing guys to call 900 MHz GDDR5 "3.6 GHz" or "3600 MHz" just as they call 900 MHz GDDR3 "1.8 GHz" or "1800 MHz". In terms of data throughput, it's an appropriate comparison.

I thought it would have more as well.

The X2 version has 1600 then? a friend told me last night it was going have 2400, but I'm not sure on that :).

Looking to be good for ATi anyway, might be tempted by the 4870 if it's as good as everyone thinks it wil be.

There was not anything to argue about, I THOUGHT the ATI card was going to be faster END OF STORY, I did not imagine I read this for past weeks and I dont really care anyhow.

Is that 1800mhz Memory 3600mhz DDR Speed or are ATI counting/naming it different.

Its GDDR5 at 900Mhz on a 256bit interface and has a max data transfer rate of 115Gb/s.

Basically means its effective speed is 3600Mhz, or equivalent to a 512bit interface 900Mhz using GDDR3 which has ~113Gb/s transfer rate. While NVidia have opted to use the cheaper GDDR3 memory and keep the expensive 512bit interface which also makes the PCB more complex, ATI went for the slightly more expensive GDDR5 but saved money on PCB complexity and the 256bit interface.
 
From what I've gathered GDDR3 running at 900MHz has the equivalent data throughput as 1800MHz without the GDDR enhancements, but GDDR5 would have the equivalent of 3600MHz. That also means GDDR5 has a fair bit of potential to get faster.
